R56 K&N Air Filter?
K&N Air Filter?
I recently Ordered a K&N Performance air filter for my 08 justacooper. Has anyone had experiance with it? Any difference in performance/fuel economy (im obviously not expecting much but even a little helps). And a question, whats the difference between a SOHC/DOHC (i know its single vs dual)? Which one does my 08 automatic cooper have? There are options for both
The second gen Prince (R56) engine, what your '08 Cooper has, is DOHC, dual overhead camshafts. First gen Tritec engine (R50, R52, R53) is SOHC, single overhead camshaft.

I tried a K&N on my 2010 justa but didn't notice any change in performance. It did increase the intake noise considerably. After 2 weeks I removed the filter and returned to stock to quiet things down a bit.
Any fuel economy differences?
I didn't notice any change in fuel economy but I really didn't have it installed long enough to give it a chance. The deal breaker for me was the extra noise.

Def Will Do. It should arrive anywhere from tomorrow to no later than Thursday. Will update the thread as it goes
I put one in my 2010 Cooper S manual at about 1200 miles...MPG has risen each tankful of 93 and now my OBC claims an 37.6 Average MPG 50/50 highway and city stop and go commuting and it peaked as high as 38.4 for about a week!
Plus, the K&N makes a cute little blow off pssst sound that I never heard with my stock paper filter (especiaally in colder weather) and quick sporty shifts.

Great to hear some positive feedback, thanks guys.. I may go ahead and order one. It looks like WMW only lists the K&N as working for the R53. Is the "Other" foam filter labeled as working for the R50 what I want? Or am I missing something?
...if you actually swap out the stock air filter housing for one of the many aftermarket ones you'll notice a greater gain in performance and fuel economy opposed to just switching the filter element.
Could you point me in the right direction?
I've been using it for the last 30,000 miles cleaning it regularly. I had the dealer put an OEM one back in on my most recent service last month. I noticed my mpg drop but I think it's b/c of the cold weather and gas. I just put the K&N one back in this week so we'll see. I didn't buy it for any performance increases but rather the ability to reuse it.
To be honest I think it's just the placebo effect either way.

So after having it on for two weeks here are some quick observations. fuel economy has risen by about 1.5mpgs. It has a better throttle responce and once over 2k RPM, the noise is noticably louder and clearer. Its not a HUGE difference per say but its there and im happy with the performance. I also had a bit of lag when putting pedal to the metal, thats noticably gone down (but not away)
I do not know where the MAP sensor is, but if it's down stream from the filter element, oil can accumulate on the sensor giving false readings and possibly worse milage as well. Along with some other, things like poping. What happens if you oil too much the filter some of the oil gets to the sensor, too little oil and you lose the ability to collect particulants. I know this is true with many other vehicles, but it would only matter if the MAP sensor is like I said earlier, between the filter and the intake.
I wouldn't say there's a huge difference. I got my K&N panel filter just because it was time to replace the stock paper filter.
It's slightly louder than stock, but I have not noticed any difference in throttle response, mileage or power.

I was originally looking into this one (http://www.mossmini.com/Shop/ViewPro...eIndexID=91704) but doubt I'll invest the money for now. The filer is more money plus if you don't keep it clean and oiled right you can get some extra particles flowing by. Weather it really works on a MINI as advertised I'd be interested to find out. I know that on my Porsche, the two K&N filters cost me several horse power according to a well respected engine guy.
