What's a Rip Cord doing under my rear seat?

Ok, so it's a loaded question, but here goes; so I'm in the middle of deleting my rear seat today and once the seat bottom comes out, I find what looks like a rip cord. See pic below. What is this, a hatch release?

I ask, as I'm about to Dynamat the floor all the way to the hatch. Just wondering if I can bury it and motor on?

As always, thanks for the input...

this is the security lock opener for your boot. If somehow your boot doesn't unlock electronically by the remote control, you can use this to unlock...

If you're going to use Dynamat, i would go around it and not bury it.

It's an anti theft device. Pull it and you have 2 minutes before you car explodes like a hand grenade.

interesting trivia but the early 02 did not have this feature. So if you found yourself with an S where the battery was in the boot, had the rear seats up and the shelf in place and a dead battery you were in for a wee bit of an adventure as to how one would access the battery

An option was to pop the bonnet and hook up some jumpers to provide go juice then unlock the boot . . . if you had access to another battery/vehicle.

I'll have to admit the first time it happened to me I was scratching my head for a time. It happened when the fan controller failed and the fan stayed on until the battery was dead.

If you cover it... one day you will regret it. Dynamat around it like others have said.

You guys know nothing, do you? You're just making it up.

It is actually the release for the tin tacks and oil dispenser that stops the baddies chasing you in their 1967 Fairlane. And they're wearing hats like the henchmen of all decent international criminal masterminds do.
