Dumb question on service engine light

i have 2003 mini cooper s, and i recently noticed that "service engine soon" light comes when i turn on the key. but when i start the ignition, it goes off in about 1~2 sec. i'm not sure it should not come at all or this is normal. should i visit a mechanic?

thanks

Would not hurt to have the codes read.

It is normal for the SES light to come on for a few seconds then turn off.
If it stays on then you need to have the error codes checked.

That's normal. It should tell you the mileage needed before your next oil change is due per the OBC somewhere in the gauges too. I have the chrono package so it is on the speedometer...not sure where that info is for others.

The light coming on and going off when you turn the key is a bulb check. That way someone can't remove the bulb to hide a problem with the car.
