Huge Price Discrepancy Between RealOEM and Dealer... Why?

A while back I was looking under my hood, and I noticed I was missing the black trapezoidal sound insulation that MINIs have attached to their scoop. I'm absolutely sure it was never on my car when I picked it up, and I'm the type of person that likes to take care of my things and it bothers me that I don't have it for whatever reason. So I went onto RealOEM, and started searching for the part. When I found it, the price listed was $16.67 and I figured that for around $17 I could afford to fix this issue. Today I proceeded to call my dealership and gave them the part number, and they told me they'd have to special order it and it would cost around an outrageous $102 . I couldn't believe it. Does that sound right? How can the two amounts be so vastly different?

For the sake of clarity, here is the RealOEM diagram and part number. It should be labeled as 1 on the diagram:

Part Number: 51482755612

I have run across that many times (where the real price is way more than RealOEM, the interior door panels and seat backs are way off). If you order it from parts.com it is about $45.

Ah! That's nice to know. $45 is a lot easier to swallow then something that is six times the price I had originally seen listed. I knew there was going to be a markup of some sort, but I just wasn't prepared for that much of a jump . Thanks!

For what it's worth, I read on another thread that the insulation has been discontinued on the 2010's. So you dont need to worry that they left it off by mistake.

Wow, you're right! I found the thread here. Glad to know I'm not the only one who is missing one.

I just bought 2010 MCS and it doesn't have that piece as well.
So all 2010 MCS should have one?
Thanks,
-Mike

According to the other thread I linked to earlier, it looks like MINI stopped installing these on the car starting with the 2010 model. I kind of wish they hadn't, but like I said before I'm glad it wasn't just a mistake that I didn't get one.

Car Dealership Economics 101

The top three revenue generators in any new/used car dealership:

Used cars
Parts
Service

It surprises me that you're surpised about the diff between the dealer and RealOEM.

I expected a markup for sure. Just not six times the RealOEM price is all.

Looks like most places have it for about $68, which is approximately the official list price,
and part.com has it for $45. Sometimes the RealOem price is way off or outdated,
but often it's pretty close to reality.
From reading threads on NAM over the years, it seems that many dealerships
really jack their parts prices up, whether you're taking the parts home or getting it serviced there.
Don't get me started about the labour rates or the times quoted for doing jobs.

Whether that sound insulation will make that much difference or not is one thing... does it provide heat insulation that will prevent the hood scoop from warping?

FWIW, my 2010 MCS has no insulation whatsoever under the bonnet.
