Replacing r56 REAR brake pads

Anybody done this? Are the rear calipers the same as the front i.e. remove the bottom bolt and the caliper swings up, or do you have to remove both bolts and actually take the caliper off? Or?

Thanks--
Gary

Do a search and you'll find a step-by-step DIY thread. It's tougher than the front. There are special caliper tools that make it easier to push back the piston.

just take off the 2 bolts and pop the caliper off. replace pads. done

i think you can just use an old pad and a C clamp to push the piston back in. Ive taken them off to paint, but never replaced so not sure on if its one of those twist the piston back in situations

The rear is easier in some ways and harder in others. Its easy to take it apart to pop out the pads. The new ones pop right back in. That's the good news. The bad news is that the rear pistons have to be twisted back in. There is a special tool to do it with although there are those who have done it with channel locks. The tool kit to do it with costs about $20 at Harbor Freight. The special tool makes it so easy that you'll think its the best $20 you ever spent.

And the tool is adaptable to most cars so you'll use it in the future.

If you can't find a link to the procedure here, look for one for the Gen I cars, its almost identical. Just get it done before the light comes on, or you'll need to visit the dealer to have its computer reset.

Did the work today....have to remove both bolts unlike the fronts. My C-clamp didn't work to rotate the piston like it does on my 06 so I got by with needlenose pliers.

Thanks to all.

The r53 and r56 rear brakes are the same setup but the bolts are different. It is similar to taking off the front brakes.
