Hey guys, I did my first oil change myself at 7500 miles and it appears that i was down 1 quart of oil. The car is about 5-6 months old. Its a 2010 S.

Is it normal for the car to burn off this much oil when new??
There are no leaks anywhere.

 

Yes. Turbo cars typically will burn more oil during the course of normal driving. You should probably check the oil once a month or every 2 weeks so that you don't get dangerously low.

 

Yes - This engine is known to use oil, so best check it on occasion. Ours is down 1/2qrt at about half that many miles. I find it best to check the oil when cold - easy to see the level when cold on that funky dipstick.

Plan 1st oil change at 5.000 miles or 6 months, whichever occurs first. Jan 26th will be 6 months.

Planned to go to 10,000 miles or 1 year there after. But I would say if she uses a qrt every 7,500 miles, that would be a good OCI time. Either that or refreshen the oil with a qrt then change it at 10K.

 

Mine will go through about a quart of oil every 7500 miles too. Freaked me out at first until I read about it

 

In the long run, you and the MCS may be better off just changing oil/filter at 5K miles. Are you a DIY'R type ?

 

Of course!!! Lol.....i actually used my oil extractor and sucked out the oil from up top. But pulled the drain plug to be sure and nothing was left. Extractor sucked out everything!!

 

Where did you get the Oil Extractor from ??

 

Just to add to this, you really should be checking your oil at least every other fillup.

 

Check it every other gas up. These cars love to eat oil.

 

Yes, after the change you may not use much. I went through 2 quarts on the first 10K, I kept asking for an oil change and being denied at the dealer. I changed it and the consumption stopped. I change at 5K also, now.

 

I would say some of these cars use a little oil....

Now at 25K, my '09 Clubman S does not use any appreciable amount of oil in between my 7500 mile changes.

I don't want readers to get the impression they all do it. Some do, most do not it seems.

Still, very good advice to check it often till a pattern is found - or not.

 

Mine does not eat any oil either. I read somewhere that your method of breakin has something to do with this. Not sure if this is true or not.

did you check the oil when you bought the car or did you assume the level was correct?

My 07 eats nary a drop . . . but admittedly I'm a low miles guy.

I've not added a DROP to mine, which has been serviced according to the factory/computer schedule ... aka up to now once every 12 months & I just fell out of pre-pay maintenance. My 07 has 28,000 and change on the clock.

 

My 2009 Clubman S does not use any oil either.
I want everyone to know that not all MINI's drink oil, these are very good and seem to be very reliable cars, not to mention just a pure blast to drive.
I must admit I love the SPORT button

Over all a great and very fun car to drive, I like driving again.

 

Ordered online...its electric pump! Quiet as anything and sucks great...i did not know it was even running!

 

I actually checked it but i can't seem to know where the oil level is on this stupid dipstick. Thinking of doing the notches in it like someone on this forum did.

Neither of our Mini's use any oil. I have never added a drop between oil changes. My wife's car has 26,000 miles on it and I change the oil every 7500 miles. My car has 19,400 on it and I change the oil every 5000 miles.

So I would have to agree that not all Mini's use oil and I would venture to say that most don't.

I really do not understand why so many people have trouble reading the oil level on their MINI's dipstick....

Seems really obvious to me, the level is supposed to be within the indented part on the end, preferably towards the top. If it's down to the dot on the lower part of the indention, you're a quart low.

Check your own oil level frequently and then you'll know what your car does......that's really the only one you care about, right?

Most MINIs do not "drink" oil, whether Justas or S models.

A few do. If yours doesn't, fine. If it does, keep it topped off.

 

It's not about HOW to read it.......... It's about the ability to see the oil level on that slippery teflon end. Works much better cold.

 

Use oil? Took a 4,000 mile trip, and used 0 oil. Four quarts in and four quarts out, I'm happy with that.

That implies to me that you can't determine where it's supposed to be.

Again, I have no problem seeing the oil level on the dipstick, even when the oil's brand new clean - it's even easier when it's dark. I think if the end were yellow like the top of the dipstick it would show up better, but....

Have you tried holding it at different angles to catch the light better?

 

I did not state that (the OP did in post #16), nor would I consider grinding on something that goes into the engine oil.
