Hi there, 1st post, having lots of fun since new delivery on Dec 21st, just one question: engine idle seems a tad high at 1,000 to 1,100 rpm? Shifts are easy and smooth in & out of Park etc., just seems a bit of a high idle speed. Any comments from other CVT owners would be appreciated!

The high idle is a result of v.35 or v.36 software, at least that's what it seems like to me. Prior to the installation of the software, the idle was lower, but also a little rougher. The raising of the idle speed also seemed to help the engine stumble when coming to a stop.

Hey Sailor. Welcome to NAM.

Picked up my CVT MC last Oct 30 and have 1200 trouble free and great miles now. Engine does idle at that RPM, but is very smooth and I don't have any problems. Thanks Beastmaster for the explanation. I really love the CVT on the MINI. The driving experience is very pleasant, and yet still has the MINI performance. You'll find this is a great website to network and learn more about the MINI. Enjoy your motoring!

Congrats, sailor! Enjoy your MINI CVT...it's a great car and an equally great (and versatile) transmission.

I've got nearly 8,000 trouble-free miles on my 2003 CVT Cooper...took delivery in June, 2003. The idle speed is about 900 or so, definitely not 1,000-1,100 that's for sure.

When I hit 10,000 miles and motor my way to the dealer for the first oil change service, maybe they will upload the latest software version which will increase the idle speed to 2004 model idle speed? Or maybe not... because hey, the saying goes: Don't fix what ain't broke.

This summer, we took the CVT for a pretty long drive...about 400 miles or so in 90+ degree (Fahrenheit) August days from New Jersey to Upstate New York/New Hampshire/Cape Cod/Provincetown. The car was super on all fronts, whether driving 75-80 MPH on the open freeway, or crawling at less than 2 MPH in very bad traffic on the Connecticut Turnpike in the scorching heat...handled like a champ.

The only two items I've found needed some TLC are these: #1 At around 4,000 or so miles, I checked the oil and it was a little less than half a quart low. So I filled it with 1/2 quart of Mobil 1 5W-30. Now, 4,000 miles later, it hasn't lost a drop...still exactly at the top of the hash-marks on the dipstick. #2: the coolant in the coolant tank has turned to a caramel-brown color, and it has dipped below the MIN(imum) line by about 1/2" inch. I called the dealer and they said don't worry about the coolant color change "they ALL do that" it's a reaction to the metals in the engine...and he also said "as long as the coolant in the reservoir tank doesn't disappear completely, wouldn't worry about it, we will top it off for you at your 10K oil change service."

The one thing that did strike me as "duh" was when I asked if I could just buy some coolant at a local shop (Pep Boys, K-Mart, etc.) and he said "Well, you could, but I suggest you stop in and buy the OEM MINI Coolant from us." But that's not convenient as the dealer is about an 75 minutes away. When I asked "What brand/type of coolant can I use in the MINI?" he replied: "The blue kind."

I kid you not..."just get the blue kind."

Oy!

Rock On,

Enjoy!

Rock on,

-Joe

Get the blue kind! Why? Read this from a friend who bought at 318is for a track car.

"Lesson to be learned: Use BMW coolant (ONLY) mixed with DISTILLED water. The previous owner had the green slime coolant in there, which simply destroyed the aluminum and fused the pump to the front cover. It's a good thing my front cover is okay. Flush your system at minimum every two years, best if done every year."

Doesn't sound that bad does it? Wrong. The waterpump blew on the car and my friend took off all the bolts and tried to remove it. It wouldn't come loose and the waterpump housing eventually broke off in several pieces. The internals were still stuck to the front cover of the engine. With help from a mechanic and his helper, the rest of the waterpump came off, 4 hours later.

I hvae V36 on my CVT but my idle remains at about 900-950 unless the car is cold then it is 1000-1100

Hi there, sailor here again. Thanks for all the input re: cvt idle speed, we'll run it in as it is and discuss with service around 1200-1500 miles following our break-in(wifeys ride but she lets me drive it sometimes if I polish a little first) sorta like foreplay I guess!
