The newest generation MINI GPS mount w/ a Garmin 550

Here is the newest (I believe it is the second generation) GPS mount installed in my 2010 Clubman.

I ordered the mount through a local dealer and it was $117 - took 2 days to come in.

I had a different dealer install it (for some reason they did not offer to order it, they just said to check back in a month to see if any came in but told me if I could get one they would install it) for $62.50 - a half hour of labor.

I chose a standard size Garmin because I thought the widescreen would block too much of the tach and would be partially blocked behind the steering wheel. I chose the Garmin 550 because it is waterproof and has an 8hr battery life so it will be great for mountain biking as well (comes with topo maps too!). The price was $250 + tax & free delivery from REI. It took 3 days to be delivered.

TOTAL COST- $430

The mount can be placed on either the left or right side and rotates up from the shown position about 45 degrees. The cord can be slid back into the mount when not in use.

Looks nice! The 550 is a good model. I use it on my streetbike and in the car.

Looks nice!

Can you show where the power wire goes?
Where is it hooked up to car's power?
Can it be mounted on the other side (left) of "big RPM clock"?

The power wire goes in the mount and is hardwired in to the steering column so what you see is really the only visible wire. It's on a switched lead so it turns the unit off when you turn off the accessory power to the car. It also powers up automatically when you unlock the doors.

Yes, it can go on either side of the Tach (big RPM clock) unless you have a convertible (it would conflict with the top down meter thing - openometer???)

I tried contacting my local parts dealer to ask which Garmin units this is compatible with but they weren't 100% sure, does anyone here know? Can I buy any series or type (widescreen vs. normal, ultra thin vs. normal, etc.) or are only certain units compatible?

If you're looking for a decent GPS Unit, I've got the Garmin Nuvi 265T (the T indicates Traffic), it is also on the thinner side. The Garmin Nuvi 265WT indicates that the unit is a wider unit and includes Traffic, but it was a bit to wide to have suction cup mounted to the Speedo like I do.

I think there are quite a few that will work but the wider ones may block some of the tach and be more hidden behind the steering wheel. If I remember correctly I used the Garmin website to cross reference which units used the same type of charger so I knew the plug would match (the NUVI 500 & 550 defintely work). The MINI mount just comes with the little ball so you attach the clip that comes with the Garmin for the actual mounting. Its pretty easy to mount/ dis-mount / unplug.

With regards to the traffic units, I believe the receiver is in the power cord that comes with the unit and plugs into the lighter so it is my understanding that these WILL NOT deliver traffic info when used with the power cord from the MINI mount!

I think it should fit pretty much any Garmin. It comes with just the "ball" that the bracket that comes with the GPS snaps on to. If you cross reference the accessories with the 500/550 series you should be able to find out for sure. Good Luck!
