I'm not sure about the best setup since I only have one tire change so far. Got rid of the Dunlop run-flats and went with Continental ExtremeContact DWS in 215/45-17. They are quiet and handle well, and do a great job in rain and snow. I have about 18,000 miles on them, they still ride smooth and quiet and still show the 'S' in the tread. I'm sure there are better tires out there, but these are good and priced right.

I live in Maine so I can relate to your question. I got rid of the run flats and run whatever tire I read a good review on and is affordable. I keep a can of fix-a-flat, a plug kit and a compressor in the car. For the winter I would suggest a set of 15" steel wheels and dedicated snow tires. Call the Tire Rack and see what they can do for you. If you have garage space to keep the extra wheels and tires I think it is the best and safest buy for your money. I have only driven my 03 MCS one winter as I have a truck too. Bot with the right tires the Mini is very impressive in the snow.
