Air Intake Questions?

I am thinking about adding Air Intake for my car, should I get Short or Long Air Intake?

I'd say short ram. Anything that sticks the filter down near the road gets me nervous! - then again it's pretty wet here in Hawaii.

Well, sucking in water from the ground is every bit as detrimental if not more so than dirt when it comes to engine failure. Dirt will pit valves but wear them out slowly where the engine itself will detonate with water in the combustion chamber, ruining your engine quickly and fatally. Trust me, I have been there with my old DSM

I have the aFe intake and I love it. Good fitment, great quality, comes with a heatshield, comes with two choices of filters, and is designed in the United States. I would look into them. Call Steve at VAC in Philadelphia and he will hook you up with a good deal. Here is a link to their website:

I can't figure out where in the original post it said they were going to run without a filter.

I don't know if I buy your argument though - water is not compressible. I think by volume it'd take a lot less water to destroy an engine (not just pit valves) than dirt.

As long as you're running a decent filter I doubt there's a whole lot to gain on the R50, unless you're willing to invest a bunch of money trying different setups.

Maybe you misunderstood what I was saying. If you live in a wet climate, you absolutely do not want an intake system that puts the filter closer to the ground. A little water in a very short amount of time will ruin and engine much more effectively than dirt over the life cylce of an engine. That's all that I was saying there.

A free flowing intake will let more particulates in to the engine regardless, it is free flowing. However, it also lets in more air, which in turn creates a powerful combustion action and creates more power by adding more air.

The aFe has a great heatshield that blocks heat from the filter, it fits well, it sounds cool, and it made a notcieable impact on my car's performance. I would vote for it any day of the week.

Sorry, I must have misunderstood what you were going at. I'm not satisfied with the (lack of fit) from my Injen intake - might have to look at the aFe myself.
