No Sound

I picked up a 2003 MINI for my daughter a couple of days ago. 42,000 miles, excellent condition. Only issue so far is the stereo system. The head unit works, but there is no sound. Also, about every 5 minutes or so, I'll hear a loud static sound from the rear speakers, which lasts about 3 seconds. This happens even with the head unit off.

I was told the problem is most likely the amplifier. I've checked the fuses; and I will assume that since the HU works (all modes work, just no sound), it doesn't require a code. I do have a code card, but the owners manual states it isn't required for a 2003 model. The dealer did disconnect the battery while I was looking at the car prior to purchase. Do I need to reenter this code? If so, please post steps.

The MINI dealer quoted $900 for a new amp...that aint gonna happen. I've been told if I get an aftermarket amp, I'll need a new head unit too. I'm looking at a package from Crutchfield. I've read numerous posts stating that if I replace the HU and amp, I will need to replace the wiring as well. Is this correct? Thanks in advance.

You are correct. The HK amp has died. With the HK the wiring runs from the head unit to the amp, then to the speakers. Note that you'll also need new speakers, as the HK speakers are 2ohm vs standard 4ohm.

Thanks for the info. I got an extended premium warranty when I bought the car. Are stereo systems usually covered by a bumper to bumper warranty? If so, I'm good to go.

I would think so. Easiest to have them buy you a new amp.

The way warranties work is strange. The closest dealer to me actually quotes the amp at $1200. I can get a complete aftermarket system (to include installation, steering wheel control, and speaker rewiring) for much less than that. I sort of understand the logic from their point of view, but the fact that they would rather pay to replace this amp at dealer cost rather than the cheaper alternative of replacing the entire system is beyond belief! Also, an aftermarket system wouldn't be covered, whereas if this replacement amp, or any other part of this original 2003 system goes bad during the warranty period, they'll end up paying again. But I guess rules are rules.
