Shift Mechanism Failure - 2007 MCS
Shift Mechanism Failure - 2007 MCS
Hello,
The other day my Mini 6-speed shifter failed while driving to work. The shifter would no longer go into R,1 or 2. Also, 3rd and 4th were in the position of 1 and 2. When the gears were engaged you could move the shifter around really strange feeling.

So, I made it home using only 3rd and had the car towed to the dealer. They repaired it that day replacing the shift mechanism but could not explain the failure to me and that it is very rare problem. This leaves me feeling a little apprenhensive of a repeat failure or a bigger problem surfacing. It's great they had the parts on hand but is this a common problem or a symptom of something else lurking beneath the hood.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Interesting. I just had the same failure on my 2007 MCS. Waiting for a flatbed to the dealer for a warranty repair. Anyone else having this problem?
BTW, I know what caused it - I was just talking up the car to a co-worker and it had to show me who was boss!

I don't know if anyone is monitoring this thread anymore but I had a shift mech problem. Driving in morning rush traffic I was having difficulty going into gears (all) when my entire shift lever came out of the floor. The car is a 2007 Cooper with 48k on the clock. I moved it around to find the hole and wacked it down hard on the ****. All seamed fine but I took it by the dealer in Charlotte. They pulled it apart and could not find any issues. They thought it must have been not quite set from the factory and finally let loose. Very unsettling. Anyone else seen something like this?
