a common term is "short block" which is as you asked the block and internals, and the head with valves etc ... but no fuel delivery or exhaust system. I state this from a 'classic' perspective tho where I got no carb or intake manifold, no exh' manifold, and no dizzy or plugs ... waterpump . . . etc etc

you really want to ASK what you will be getting for your $$$$

actually a short block generally is just the block with all the internals, crank, rods, pistons, cam if it's in the block; but not including the head. Long block would include the head , but still usually not include manifolds, distributor or accessories like starter or alternator. some suppliers, for some applications may have a drop in rebuilt which would include some of those things.

MINI refers to all engines as short block when actually they are long blocks.

you get the head, block all internals, vacuum pump, plugs, water pump, and I think thats about it.
on the early models they even came with coil and plug wires, crank pulley

It's usually valve cover to oil pan. All manifolds, sensors, wireharneses, brackets and whatnots have to be transfered from the old engine.
