Check Engine Light and Just bought my JCW! Hearing Fireworks!

Finally got my dream car (ebay) and CEL comes on! i have a 06 JCW with almost 120k miles, i thought the car looked in decent shape but after i bought it and came home, CEL came on. I ran a diagnostic and here it is:

P2270 - O2 Sensor Signal stuck lean - bank 1 sensor 2
P2096 - Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Too Lean or Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Low Limit
P0137 - 02 Sensor Circuit Low Volts (Bank 1 Sensor 2)
P0130 - 02 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

I'm guessing i need a new Cat :-/ ??? When i'm driving it, the car is making a very loud noise coming out from the bottom middle of the car and when changing around gears and accelerating, i hear fireworks spitting out from the car.

When you buy an Ebay car with 120K you should probably expect some deferred maintenance and problems. The trouble codes might be as simple as an O2 sensor. The "loud noises coming from the bottom middle of the car" might be more significant, but you're not going to get much useful info with descriptions like "fireworks spitting from the car".

Give the car a chance. Find a good mechanic and work the problems. It might be a big deal, it might be minor.

well yah i'm pretty sure it needs a new 02 sensor and the noise issue, its pretty much a loud noise coming from under my seat towards the engine and i'm guessing based on the codes, it just needs a cat

May just have an exhaust leak... hole in the exhaust... header leak... missing O2 sensor... all kinds of things it could be other than a bad cat.

Unless the catalytic converter is clogged, it should last for many years. The O2 sensors are supposed to be replaced around 100K miles. Usually, you only have to worry about the one located pre-cat. The post-cat O2 sensor is designed to read and make sure the catalyic converter is working correctly. It gets less carbon emissions and lasts longer.

I would also check the wiring. Perhaps something just came loose.

Now that you know the problems, get a second opinion from a local shop, save some cash and shop around. Im sure the dealer will charge the most.

With that mileage I wouldnt doubt some of the issues could arrise but curious how the steering rack went bad, other than running low on fluid perhaps?

You can get a catted Milltek header from Helix for around $1100.

You could probably go to a good muffler shop and have a hi-flow cat installed for $2-300.

its definitely exhaust related...does the car seem weak? If the converter is clogged you may lose a significant amount of power. We had a grand prix with a clogged cat...couldnt go over 25 mph...it was like I hit a switch and the car turned "Grandma mode" on me. Hope you get it fixed and start motorin...

I believe that the stock exhaust manifold or header is the same whether it's JCW or S. For the exhaust, I belive it's only the cat back portion that is different. Therefore, you can probably find a used S header for cheap, under $200

You could probably replace with a used header/cat for less than buying a cat and having to get it welded in!
