Selling Run Flats

OK, stupid question time.

I take delivery of an MCS Mayfair in a few days. I hate runflats. It has been suggested that I sell them and replace them with tires of my choice, and that I can more than pay for the new tires this way.

Is this true? How much of a market is there for new runflats? If I put a few hundred miles on them before replacing them will I substantially reduce the value? I think it makes more sense to have my tire dealer replace the tires than to have my dealer do so, because the dealer has far better price and selection. Am I right?

How do I sell my new run flats? What I want to avoid is spending the bucks on new tires only to wind up having the run flats taking up permanent space in my too-small garage.

If I were you I would keep them around just incase or at least one or two of them. Selling, just put them in the marketplace here on NAM or Criagslist or even ebay.

Browsing through the market place will give you an idea of values new and used.

I was advised in another string that new runflats were easy to sell. The consensus so far seems to disagree with that advice.

I am not willing to just leave them laying about, and I am not interested in paying for a new set of tires if I cannot recover the cost of 'normal' tires by selling the very overpriced runflats. I do not want anywhere near retail for the tires, since they seem to sell for 3-4 times the price of regular tires. But if I cannot get enough from them to pay for a decent set of conventional high performance tires, then I will just drive on em till they wear out, and hope that happens soon.

Ahh, never mind. I've looked at the marketplace, and nearly new runflats are going for nearly naught. There is no magic market out there for these monstrosities.

i would venture to guess you can get almost as much as you need to get new tires... id guess you may get about 100 per tire, thus new tires are usually a bit more than that

Probably depends on the RF's too as there are a few different ones offered. There is a market, as people like to retain that peace-of-mind and they can still get a deal, and you a profit

I'm wearing mine out because no one who would buy used tires is likely to pay the price that a new set of HP tires would cost. I suspect that you could sell them in a minute for $100, but probably not much more than that, realistically.

In the grand scheme of things, I suspect that MINI uses run-flats because the manufacturers give them a deal on them. It seems to me that it would be easier to sell us on the idea of not having a spare than it is to talk us into "liking" these tires. Mazda has no issue whatsoever with telling its customers that there is no spare in a Miata and that they have given us a little pump and some slime instead. I never really even once worried about not having a spare on my Miata.

But take heart -- a really good set of non-run-flats can be had for about $400 when the time comes.

Good luck.
