Ordering soon - worth the $100 smartphone prep option?

Hello,

I have read many posts of people seeming to like this option. And while I understand the $100 option still requires the purchase of a cradle (additional ~$120), do you all feel this is something I should include in my build?

I have become quite confused reading past posts on whether it is possible to play music through an iPhone through only the included Y-Cable or if you can only play music with the smartphone prep option installed? Any clarifying on this is most appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any replies. If I missed something in a search please feel free to pass long a previous threads that may explain the above.

We just picked up ours today and we just have the Y cable coming out from under the dash or radio. I can say it works great. The phone is charging, its playing tunes and is also synced up with the phone with bluetooth. I am glad we didn't get it because we didn't want the armrest and the way it worked out wa great for us.

I did NOT get the phone prep option, but did get the convenience package with comfort bluetooth W/USB/IPOD adapter...added 250.00 and included the center arm rest, in which i would NEVER do without the armrest. ALL of the electronics are in the arm rest for the phone prep. All I would need to purchase is the cradle I believe. If the additional 100.00 gives you the cradle I would say its a good deal. If not, I don't know why they would try to charge another 100.00

I am not using the armrest for a phone, because I find it really cumbersome to open the arm rest an have to click the phone in then take it back out. My phone stays in my pocket and calls come through the BT. This keeps me from fumbling, texting and emailing while driving. One less distraction I need in the car.

however I put my Pineer INNO SAT radio in there. Ran the wires through the wire channel on the support arm and ran them under the center console, no wires exposed, you would not even know there is a SAT radio in the car. I only listen to about 3 stations regularly so changing stations is not a big deal.

In my recommendation you will seriously regret it if you spend the money for the Bluetooth Comfort and don't get Smartphone prep...the plug in cradles function as little more than a charger without the Smartphone prep...

Read the whole following thread for very helpful discussion on the issue.

The arm rest thing is quite amusing on here on NAM. People either love it or hate it. I could not do without the arm rest. I have had a few loaners in the past year or so and that is one of the first things that I notice... lack of an arm rest and it drives me nuts.

I did not order my car but I chose it because it was all optioned up and I got a great deal on it. I am really glad that it has the am rest and the Smartphone prep. I am upset that my iPhone in the cradle in the armrest does not play music as its missing that option and it can't be added.

Spend a few bucks to make the car more functional for you.

You can play music from an iPhone through the Y-cable. If you don't use the Y-cable and want to play music from an iPhone in the armrest, you'll need the smartphone prep.

SmartPhone Prep and other music apps, like slacker radio

Me too, but I have some observations to make.

I have unlocked/jailbroken my iPhone to use Slacker Radio. In the midst of driving, I find myself changing stations on the Slacker App, much like I did when I was using XMRadio Dock before I returned it for the poor sound quality. (sorry about the run on sentence)

If my iPhone was in the armrest, It would be quite difficult to reach back, change stations, and still have eyes on the road. I even wonder, would any other iPhone music playing app work while the phone is plugged into the armrest? The Armrest Smartphone option is great if you are going to use the ipod from the iPhone.

I'd like to hear from Smartphone prep users if they are using other music app..especially Slacker Radio, which kicks butt by the way.
