I don't have my MINI yet. I passed on the HK becasue I wanted to put some cool aftermarkt stuff in it.

The systen coming with the car was advertised as a 6 speajer system. The HK was advertised as an 8 speaker system.

The dealer has no idea where the extra 2 speakers go. Anyone know where they go and if I'll need to buy any factory grills/kits to add the extra two speakers to my 6 speaker MINI?

Thanks in advance.

>>I don't have my MINI yet. I passed on the HK becasue I wanted to put some cool aftermarkt stuff in it.

You have to keep in mind the following:
The stock system is good and will work for the majority of owners.
The H/K audio upgrade is quite good for the $550 expense and it will be much better than the stock audio.
In order for you to do better you may have to spend from $1000 to $2500 more to get better sound than the H/K system depending on your needs and requirements.

>>The systen coming with the car was advertised as a 6 speajer system. The HK was advertised as an 8 speaker system.

The 6 stock speakers are the following-very obvious 2 tweeters one in each door high up, 2 midrange woofers in each door low down and 2 rear speakers.

The H/K speakers total 8-The 2 front midrange/woofers, the 2 rear dual voice coil speakers and for the 2 tweeters they are really each co-axial mid range and tweeter speakers so 2 speakers mounted on the same center axle so 2 for each door.

No extra grilles needed and you don't want to add the H/K speakers to your stock system unless you have the full H/K system including the Amp/DSP and wiring harness for H/K which you are not likely to already have installed and which you cannot buy from the dealer. You therefore cannot easily install H/K to your stock audio MINI. Sorry-many of us have tried.

If you are interested in replacing the speakers you need to read this:

Those are fantastic links. Thanks for those. I'm really not interested in anything from HK because of a few reasons:

a.) My M Roadster came with "upgraded" HK speakers and they were dreadful.
b.) I work for SRS Labs. H/K licenses Logic 7 surround instead of SRS Circle Surround. I prefer the sound of CS to L7 despite my working for SRS.
c.) I have a preference for Polk
d.) I have about $1200 to blow on my stereo thanks to recent stock performance

I'm thinking of these for the rear:

And these for the front:
http://www.polkaudio.com/car/specs.php?name=ex3560

The tweeters will require a custom hole high in the door. It that's not possible due to design, I'll get these for the front:
http://www.polkaudio.com/car/specs.php?name=mmc650

Their specs are all beyond what the factory or H/K specs are. It's interesting that the extra two "speakers" are actually just tweeters housed where the original area only had a woofer.

I'm going to have a tough time with getting the steering wheel to control the head unit and I know it's been covered before but I could sure use the links to threads about aftermarket head unit control from the steering wheel.

I also ordered the Aux line in jack but I'm realizing that it's going to have a connector specifically for the factory head unit so it'll be a lot of work. There's a chance the car might be used as a show car at the upcoming CES show in Las Vegas. In that case, SRS and another company would be outfitting the custom stereo free of charge in exchange for using the car on the show floor.

Thanks for all of your help. This place is great.

Those are some threads to get you started but there are actually more. Many are a good read and have more info than you need.

>>a.) My M Roadster came with "upgraded" HK speakers and they were dreadful.
That was a known problem which has been mentioned many times. The MINI's H/K is much better. Still not perfect to all though.

>>b.) I work for SRS Labs. H/K licenses Logic 7 surround instead of SRS Circle Surround. I prefer the sound of CS to L7 despite my working for SRS.
>>c.) I have a preference for Polk
That's fine I have a set of Polk Series II EX693a 3 way 6x9 speakers sitting around in my garage. And Polk speakers for my home stereo surround system.

>>d.) I have about $1200 to blow on my stereo thanks to recent stock performance
You're going to use it up fast. Who is doing the install?
>>I'm thinking of these for the rear:
These are the new three way 6x9 speakers with separate cross-overs. Pretty fancy for the rear passengers but for a show car it could work. To get the most out of the bass range you'll need lots of clean power or add a sub.

>>And these for the front:
These are OK but the 1" tweeter is slightly larger than the 3/4" stock tweeters so some cutting might be needed.

>>The tweeters will require a custom hole high in the door. It that's not possible due to design, I'll get these for the front:
These speakers are OK but the highs of the tweeters would be aimed at your ankles not your ears where they belong.

>>Their specs are all beyond what the factory or H/K specs are. It's interesting that the extra two "speakers" are actually just tweeters housed where the original area only had a woofer.

The two extra speakers are midrange coaxial in the tweeter position high on the doors.

>>I'm going to have a tough time with getting the steering wheel to control the head unit and I know it's been covered before but I could sure use the links to threads about aftermarket head unit control from the steering wheel.

Do you already have the multi-function steering wheel which controls the audio system? Or are you adding the steering wheel control and want to use it with the stock radio or aftermarket radio?
