Odd Radio Glitch - switches from Tuner to AUX during engine start

2009 Cooper S, with standard stereo, bluetooth.

First I insert the key fob, which starts the electrical system. The stereo system is set to Tuner (which was the setting when I previously left the car). Then, after I depress the clutch pedal and push the starter button to start the engine, the stereo switches itself to AUX. I have the AUX/USB cables plugged in, but no iPod or other device attached to the cables.

Does anyone else have this problem? It does this about 75% of the time.

Gendaito: Do you have comfort access? If so, perhaps the battery needs replacing. If no comfort access, perhaps you grabbed the second key.

Anyone else having this problem?

i've got an '03 r50... i had an aftermarket head unit installed around christmas '08.. now, when i push climate control buttons it shorts one of the rear speakers out... all i can think for mine is that he forced the head back in the hole and it messed up a couple of wires in there..

Gendaito,
Maybe we can get your topic back to the original question and keep it relevant to 2nd GEN's.

I had to replace the battery in my second key when it kept "forgetting" settings. I didn't notice if the audio system settings changed so I can't say for sure that your issue would be caused by that. It's not a tough procedure and it's not very expensive but it just might take care of it.

You could try your wife's key to see if the problem follows the key(s).

I had this exact problem over a year ago, and I just realized that I never posted my solution. It would have good weeks and bad weeks, then it started getting bad more and more often. Replacing the radio under warranty didn't help. ...until the car (starter) battery failed. With a new battery, problem gone.

It seems that this was the first symptom of a failing battery. During engine cranking, a battery's voltage dips under the heavy load. When a battery gets older, that dip gets lower and lower; in any electrical system something has to be the first to drop out.

Exactly my scenario with my 2008. New battery fixed it. Makes me think the $2000.00 radio unit put in earlier under warranty was just a battery going bad. Dunno. I do a lot of short trips since my work is a short sub 3-mile commute so I use a battery tender now and then.

I also had a very short, 10 minute commute at the time. I contacted Gendaito and his commute was also very short.

I don't think a short commute is required for this problem to come up, but it makes sense that it would exacerbate it. A battery will have difficulty when it rarely gets fully recharged.

I hope our resolution posts here save someone a headache later!
