R56 how do i know when my car should go in for its first service??
how do i know when my car should go in for its first service??
I have 14k miles on it...bought it 8/09. I did an preemptive strike oil change at 5k, and am planning on doing another one this week.
I have no idea how to scroll thru the cars computer to find any of this info.

When you first start up the car, you should see a message appear briefly in the window in the tach with how many miles until a service is due.
The manual has instructions on how to scroll through the computer readouts if you want more specific information.

If you don't drive many miles in a year and do not come up on your service within a year, you are entitled to what the dealership calls a low mile/yearly oil change.
As an example: I purchased my car on November 29th of 2008. A year later I only had 10,00 miles on the car. So I called the dealership and they told me to bring it in so that they could do an oil change free of charge. This is part of the service warranty. I also changed my oil myself at 5,000 miles.
My car still shows about 4000 miles to the first service. So I will bring the car in for that service in the late spring or early summer.

Yes you can go on right at the 1 year anniv. for your complimentary oil change regardless of whether the car is showing service needed or not. As they will tell you, the service computer will NOT be reset to make sure you are on schedule for your first computer indicated service. Just make sure even if you do any oil changes yourself you do not reset the service computer.
Read your manual so you learn how to scroll through all the required service items. There are some that are time based regardless of your mileage so they have a due date in there. I just went through this because my oil change was due to a date and not miles (not the same as the annual for low miles).

I thought my wife's base R56 would need an oil change at one year, but looking at the display it says next year (in October).
Right now it's only got 3,000 miles (she does not drive it a lot) but by next October it will have 5,000 - 6,000 so I'll get it changed or change it myself.
The BMW extended oil change intervals are crazy, I realize with synthetic you can go a while but I'd never go beyond 8,000 - 10,000 on an oil change, oil is cheap and so are filters I think the extended intervals are just BMW's way of saving money on their "free" maintenance" plans...
