what's it gonna take to bring my R53 MCS to 280bhp?

Hi everyone,

Newbie here hoping to get some advice.

I guess the first obvious question would be if 280 is a realistic number to begin with.

got a manual R53 MCS with the following parts:
2% crank pulley
15% SC pulley
M7 DFIC2
Supersprint full exhaust system from header to muffler

Brakes and handling bits aside which have been catered for already, what else is it gonna take to get my car to around 280bhp (or closest possible)? Obviously I'd need a competent garage and tuner to optimise the package.

Schrick cams? stage 2 ported head (retailed by mini mania)? what cc injectors?

Regarding the ECU, i've been surfing online stores, there doesn't seem to be a direct ECU replacement available in the market but piggybacks with pre installed maps?

Would appreciate your inputs!

cheers, stanley

280bhp measured on what dyno, under what conditions?

In general, 250whp (not bhp) seems to be kinda the magic hurdle in the MINI world for cars with "bolt on" mods such as intake, head, cam, header, injectors, pulleys, exhaust, custom tuning. Some cars go with all these things and still can't break 250whp.

To significantly exceed that typically requires some combination of stroked engine / different supercharger / turbo conversion / twincharge / rebuilt bottom-end... where you're playing in a different league in terms of cost and commitment.

That said, there are a ZILLION threads on this. I recommend you commit at least 20 hours to sifting through and reading them if you're really serious.

MONEY is what it takes.

Question to ask yourself. Why do you need 280hp?? Have you ever driven a 280hp front wheel drive car? TORQUE STEER

Also at 280hp are you thinking this is going to be a daily driver? at that number reliability will more than likely become an issue.

Yes Way is right. A 280hp MINI couldn't possibly be a daily driver. At least I wouldn't want it to be one due to the amount of money I would put into it. If you plan on tracking the car then by all means go for it.

I've tried searching under generic terms which turned up lots of equally non- specific threads.

Could you help me here with keywords, perhaps the brand names of the above- mentioned non bolt- on equipment? much appreciated!

In addition to all the answers you already have gotten, you need to see what is legal where you live. If you live in a state/country with low smog laws, 280 bhp is a piece of cake, TURBO! If you live in California, with it's insane smog laws, not so easy keeping your car to look at least somewhat legal And now with the rolling inspections out here it gets kinda scary

This is why I might not move to California. However I would certainly love to.

Spend some hours just browsing through threads in this forum:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...n-cooper-s-16/

Also, google search works a lot better than the NAM search - just google for whatever terms you're looking for, and add site:northamericanmotoring.com at the end of the search terms.

Interesting things to search for: stroker, rotrex, mynes turbo, twincharge...
