So it's getting chilly here in DC...we're having our first morning under 32 degrees. I've noticed something recently that's been bothering me, and wanted some input from you all.

For the past two weeks or so, I've noticed that my brakes are sqeaking a little while they're cold...and it seems to disappear when they warm up. I did the requisite search, and found some references to cold, squeaking brakes, but nothing definitive. Since it's that time of the year again, I thought I'd raise the issue.

So, I've got 14K miles on my MCS, a fair amount of highway, and no track time. I drive spiritedly, but not heavy on the brakes, and don't think I should have worn them out by now. I'm not sure how long the OEM brakes are expected to last, though, and so wanted some input. So...

A) Any other "cold squeakers" out there?
B) Does the wear indicator work when the brakes are warm...(i.e. should I be concerned that I'm getting to the point where I need to replace)?
C) What are folks getting for brake lifetimes (considering driving style, etc.)?

Apologies if there's a thread on this that I missed...if that's the case, I'd appreciate a link...

Thanks all!

Just started hearing the 37 degree bong sound here in CT. I have a MCS with 8000
interactive miles. Prefer the accelerator to the breaks and down shifting when required for corners. No noises or squeakies here.

Happy Motoring!

Cold brakes *will* squeak. The more aggressive the pad, the more they will squeak when cold. If they squeak all of the time it may be time to change pads, as that is the wear indicator rubbing the rotor. 14k miles, unless you track the car, you should still have plenty of pad left.

Just to be sure, have someone that knows cars take a look.

mine squeaks a little when lightly braking coming to a stop below 10mph
while cold. once warmed up, no squeak. if braking pretty hard, no squeak.

if its 40F or more, no squeek even while cold.

I am also experiencing a previously unnoticed tendency for the brakes to squeak. (6,700 miles) I was wondering if excess brake dust was the issue, but now it would appear that it is a common "feature", aren't we blessed.

The service techs I spoke to at Motor City MINI claim the brake "chirp" (their words) is a common tendency with the MINI and is not indicative of premature brake or brake pad wear. At least that's the company line.

All Bimmers do this. The solution on the M3 board is to drive really fast and brake really hard
