Interesting discussion on the bimmerfest.com forum, even though some of the people posting are unbelievably arrogant towards the Cooper (including one guy who thinks his 328Ci is the end all and be all of the automotive world). The poll results are almost dead even though...

I read the post and most people that are rational are saying that the M3 maintenance and insurance (upkeep) costs are bad not to mention a lack of warranty depending on if you are thinking used M3 vs new MCS.
Some said the M3 is a rolling time bomb. Maybe a fast one.

My MCS is rock solid with no troubles. Hard to argue with that.

You said it. They get so many trolls on those boards that they need to go to extreme lengths to let only legitimate people post. They attract all those trolls through sheer arrogance though.

...oh get over it. Bimmer owners are no more wacko than any other car owners. Geeze. Like, is there something wrong with being passionate about your car/hobby??

I would imagine some people visiting a MINI board might get the feeling that us MINI owners might have delusions regarding the MINI...most of the responses on that board were within reason and without vitriol. And had registration been easy, I wonder how many "newbies" would have rushed in to slam the MCS detractors? That behavior would be no better IMO.

Right on Ryan,

Car clubs = Tribalism

It's always us vs. them when it comes to car clubs, BMW forum snobs just because you need a referral to join? I don't think so. by restricting forum membership to those referred by other members, a true hard core enthusiast membership can develop. I read their posts, those guys seemed passionate and thoughtful about their rides. More power to 'em. Would I want to see restrictions plased on NAM membership? H*ll NO! I like having everyone join up, even though we get an occasional troll or two. We are passionate about our rides too, and on occasion look at comparos between MINIS and other vehicles.

I've notice some of the same snobery going on from MCO/NAM members who got fed up with thier MINIs and dumped them for "real" Bimmers.
I can say that I tore up a mid 90s(?) M3 while messing around on an empty road in the rain one evening. He was trying to keep up, but either his skills, tires, or his rwd couldn't handle that FL rain. I finally had to let him go before he ended up in a ditch or something.

Im always amused by comparisons of which car can beat another car.

A RWD muscle-car with a lot of horsepower will kill a MCS at a stoplight race, but let me pick the twisty mountain road of my choice and I would likely be willing to race that same car for pink slips.

It all boils down to who has the right car at the right place and time.

For me, the thrill of motoring in my MINI is in the performance while ripping through the twisties where raw horsepower and 1/4 times become unimportant compared to the ability to grip the road at high lateral G's

That being said, I still want a little more power for my MCS.

When are you doing a Southern Pully Party Randy? How about showing up at the Tail of the Dragon in April?

I got tired of reading after I read "it doesnt ignite any driving passion, it's a modern knock off, the E30 is the first blah blah blah"

Ya, it might be a modern remake but they actually did a good job like the Z.

Having had at one time a new non-modified E30 M3 and then years later a new non-modified MCS the E30 M3 in my view wins hands down in the performance and quality department. My only complaint with the M3 was its four cylinder engine was “buzzy” and caused the inside rear view mirror to be useless. Given the choice between a 15 year old E30 M3 and a new MCS I would take the MCS as my daily driver.

Well since I own a MCS and an M3 I could not resist.....

I think some of you are confused about which M3 model is being talked about. The E30 M3 is very different than the E36 and E46 M3s. As far as comparing a stock E30 M3 (not sure about the specs but I know it is less than 200 HP) to a stock MCS I would say the cars are "relatively" close in performance, mainly because the MCS uses newer technology than the E30 M3. But I would think the E30 M3 would still edge out an MCS, but I admit that I have never driven an E30 M3.

Now the E36 M3 is a different ball game. A stock E36 M3 (at 240 HP and 210 TQ) will outperform a stock MCS any day, in the turns or a straight line even when you take things like power to weight ratio in consideration. This is not a slam against the MCS, I have an MCS and love it to death, but it can't compare to an E36 M3, especially a modified one. The E36 M3 can't compare to the E46 M3 (at 333 HP and 290 TQ) so I think it is pretty obvious that an MCS can't touch an E46 M3.

As I have said before, I love my MCS, especially as a daily driver. But comparing an MCS to an M3 (an E36 or E46 model in particular) is comparing apples and oranges.

This really is apples to oranges here. The e30 m3 is an incredible car.I have been fortunate enough to drive a few of them myself. If both were brand new and price being equal, which it wouldn't be by a long shot, I would choose the m3 hands down. But an e30 m3 is obscenely expensive to maintain, and by the nature of the car, many of them have been beaten to within an inch of their life on a daily basis. Not to mention these are all old cars now.I hope to someday own one of these now-rare cars someday, but not until I am so wealthy it's sickening. But that probably isn't going to happen anytime soon so i'll just have to be happy with similiar performance in my under warranty, cheap to maintain cooper s.
