Only 410 miles and exceed 4500rpm

I thought it should be covered here but I could not find it. Sorry if this is already covered.

Ouch... it was close to 4500rpm when I drove wife's 2010 Mini cooper S yesterday. While I driving I just wanted to try to use the paddle shifter (since I drove only 6 spd manual Mini cooper S), so I push the paddle shift and more gas.... wow suddenly rpm went to close 4500rpm, so I off gas quickly... probably be rpm was 4200 or 4300 or 4400... but this is first time to get over 4000rpm.

The manual said that "... but do not exceed the following ... 4500rpm or 100mph ..." I hope it won't hurt the new engine

I just want to hear the engine will be fine, but what do you guys think? is she going to be okay?

it will be fine. Just dont make a common pratice out of it until the break in is over. I was the same way with mine when I first got it not I run it like a spotted ape. My baby hits 6500 on a daily basis.

Ahh yeah, Thanks all replies. But my concern was it's close to 4500rpm (maybe it was 4300 or 4400) went few seconds (maybe 5 ~ 10 seconds) constantly before I off the gas...

despite what the manual says, it's good to vary yr rpms during break-in, just dont use the cruise yet.

Dont sweat the 4500 blip a bit.

There are a lot of folks that swear your engine will perform better and last longer if you ignore the factory recommended break in.

I chose to go with the recommendation, but I certainly wouldn't worry about a quick excursion above 4K! I am absolutely sure that you will never see that one event cause a problem for you!

Enjoy your new car! They are awesome, aren't they?!?!?

what's worse is babying an engine during break-in period

You didn't even hit 4500, so why worry. Its only guidelines, so why worry. I hit the redline in Quentin exiting the dealer, it didn't seem to do him any harm. (Then I reread the manual and thought I'd better be a bit more gentle.) I slipped up plenty of times during break in on al the MINIs.

I've heard that bogging the motor is worse during break in than high revs (not applicable with the auto). I also think you're already well broken in at 400 miles anyways.

Don't give it a second thought - no damage of any kind could have occurred. Modern engines are very well machined and a break in period is far less important than in years past. You will find posts here in NAM from engine mechanics that go so far as to say that being too easy on the engine those first few thousand miles is actually not good for seating the rings in the engine.

I made several trips into the forbidden zone during breakin. None were intentional but after all the cars I've owned I didn't lose any sleep over it. I am one of those who feel a spirited breakin is good in the long run.

This is true. The rings are seated in under 500 miles. The rings are the only part of then engine that actually "break in" during the first few hours of the engine running.

The break in period is BMW covering its own ***.

Plus I'm sure every person who took that car out on a test drive before you ran it to well above 4500.

(What?! You mean I'm the only guy who takes cars out on spirited test drives?!)

I accidentally did the same, had to make a quick move to get out of an intersection, it went high, but didn't last long. I'm not going to make a goal out of it, but things are still running so far...

I try to vary engine RPM a lot and not rev the engine to high RPMs under load during the break in period. I will allow high RPM engine braking, however. I have read that it helps the rings seat. I will get back to you in 100,000 miles to let you know if it's working! At least I will once my car comes in!

no worries at all. Most engine builders request 100 mile break in.

I was "playing" with a Civic type S the day after i took delivery of mine. 15 thousand miles later and its still as strong as the day i was messing around. Good times.
