R50/53 What mpg for an MCS?
I get about 28 combined city/highway in my late '03. Driving pretty hard, 93 octane each gas-up.
Trending Topics
My combined avg is about 28 mpg, for my 03 MCS with 23k mi, 16" RF tires.
City is mostly 24-26, but can be as low as 21-22 on spirited driving. Hwy is 30-32 mostly, but when eeking out every bit of fuel I've gotten mileage as high as 38 (ok, only once, not typical). Also noticed that AC reduces mpg by about 2-4 depending on conditions, and cruise control reduces by about 1-3 mpg, depending on how you drive. All of these are calculated values, as my OBC over-estimates by about 8-10%. Tire pressure (and size) makes a difference, but in my experience the biggest difference is how you drive.
Lowest I've ever gotten was on the track: 8mpg.

>>Title says it all.
This past weekeknd we drove Boston to New York & got 31MPG avg speed 74MPH. On the way back we hit some traffic near the tapan Zee bridge (which counts for the slightly lower MPH) got 34MPG avg speed 70MPH I'm getting better Highway MPG in my MCS than on the '03 MC I traded in. Guessing it has to do with that 6th gear and the fact that I often drive over 80MPH.
I usually shift at 3000 RPMs but from time to time open up to 4500 or so.
In town, avg 17mph, I get 23MPG, About the same as in my '03 MC, though, if driving over 40 mph I drop the MCS into 5th gear (around 2000 RPMS)
I have an '04 MCS with 1500 & loving every mile!

On my mixed highway and city street commute, I'm hovering around 28 MPG. Open highway, I'm safely over 30 MPG. The MCS, she seems to like the altitude. I get nearly 34 MPG when I venture into the high country for scenic drives.
Well there you have it, There is enough data above already given that ranges can be applied for MCS.
Given premium gas which will vary in octane from 91 to 93 octane
And add 2-4 mpg for using the AC depending on how much urban traffic there is.
Add 1-3 mpg for using the cruise control(from MG-BGT's comments)?
(This doesn't seem right, should be more like +0-1))
These are all calculated values from filling a tank of gas and driving then refilling.
OBC over-estimates by about 8-10%
Tire pressures do make a difference.
If driven as hard as you like expect
17 to 22mpg
In the city about 20-24 mpg.
On the hwy about 30-34 mpg with a high of up to 37 or 38.
In combined use 26-28 mpg
And now a word about mods:
When my 2003 MCS was more stock (madness intake only) (Also I always use premium gas and never run AC)I got
City and track days- 20 to 22 mpg
Best Hwy- 33-34 mpg
combined- easy consistent 28+ mpg
Now at 8000 miles with intake,61mm throttlebody, milltek header with wrap, quicksilver exhaust, pilo ignition upgrade with M7PB
and lightweight (36 pounds per corner) wheels at 33 psi each:
City 20 mpg
Hwy 29-30 mpg
combined 25-26+ mpg
I'll be adding pulley and ECU upgrades and that should help up to 2-3 mpg hopefully.
Moral of the story-
The MCS engine is efficient and the gearing is reasonable to expect as high as 34 to 38 mpg at best on the hwy yet it is prone to much lower gas mileage as low as 17-20 mpg with track driving or long periods of idling.
Given that the MCS can perform at extremely high levels this is quite a feat. Take another powerful car to the track and on the hwy and see what kind of numbers you can generate while having so much fun driving.
In today's very expensive climate for fuel I am glad that the MINI does so well and it's part at saving fuel. We could be all out there driving camaros and mustangs and getting 12 to 18 mpg.
Less wide (175) non runflat tires like 55 or 60 series tires will provide less rolling resistance and hence better gas mileage but what the hell- drive it like you stole it.

Someones probably already said it and I'll say it again, depends on how you drive.
When driven by me, read floored on take off 3200ish rpm cruise, my 04 with 2k miles gets 25 on a tank with a mix of floored acceleration and highway cruising. When on a trip I sat it under 3k in 6th gear and was getting 40s on the constant so I was probably getting well over 30 mpg and on the streets on the same trip I was getting 20ish, again, I drive it hard.

My '03 MCS now has just over 9K miles on the clock. Overall average is 24.9 MPG. Worst tankful was 20.1, and best tankful was 28.0. I'm running on 17x7 S-lite wheels with 205/45 Pirelli Eufori@ run-flat tires. And my OBC is consistantly 3 to 4 MPG too optimistic.

I picked up my MCS a little over a week ago and have put 500 miles on it. In those 500 miles I averaged 28.6 mpg. 300 miles are city miles and 200 miles are highway miles. Of course, this may not be a good indication of mpg because I have not taken it above 4000 rpm. I am sure that when the engine is broken in, my mpg will drop.
