I noticed that there is a third location for a headlight, what is it? Has anybody done anything with this? I searched for it already, but was unable to find anything.

Looks like a reflector port adjacent to the high beam lens. It appears to serve no usefull purpose.

Cars with the xenon headlight system have a 'xenon' insignia in that area. Supposedly under the insignia (it is cap-shaped) there is a functional part of the system, be it the levelling motor or the power inverter, since these items cannot really occupy much space under the bonnet in the area allotted for the headlight assemblies (the standard headlights fill up the space already). I know of no one who had had their xenon headlight taken apart yet, so I cannot say for sure!

I was gonna attempt to put some small blue lights in there, but the space is just too small. Maybe someday someone will figure out what to do with that odd looking space.

With the Xenon lo beams (hi beams are still just regular Q-I lamps), there is a small vent for the area under the clear plastic fairing, with the word "xenon" on it. This is low on the outboard side of each light group. Is that what you're talking about?

I beleive it serves no useful purpose for both xenon and non-xenon lights. I remeber reading about this before, I think it was on MINI2. Apparently the hole that you see was supposed to be for the turning signal. However since the headlights are mounted to the bonnet the turning signals had to be mounted to the bumpers so that they could be seen flashing when the bonnet is raised. There was a picture of a MINI with the turning signal in that spot, if i find it i'll post it.

Mmm, green racer.

Sure wish I could follow suit and put a clear lens turn signal in that spot too!

This thread has such a great title! It smacks of conspiracy and could last forever on MINI lore! "The missing headlight!" "The original cyclops MINI design!" "Why? WHY?"

God speed.
