I dont want half assed job but is 350 crazy. I trust this guy ive been buying rims from him for 10 years. He say he will machine the brakes to smooth them out so theres no imperfections then i think prime them then paint and then clearcoat them i think. He builds all sorts of crazy cars and paints engine components so i no he can do great job. He also needs car for a day and a half. Any recomendations? Can i buy just calipers from any company?

 

is he removing the calipers and the caliper carriers to machine the brakes? he would need to in order to machine them properly. is the 350 for all 4? it seems reasonable if he is removing the parts off the car.

if you want to buy calipers for him to paint you can buy them at any mini dealer and probably most parts stores.

 

$350 is not really that bad if he is machining the outside of the calipers. That will probably be over an hour a piece just for that. Now to do that he must take them all off the car. That will be another 45 minutes to an hour. Once machined they will need to go into the spray booth for primer and dry then for a few coats of paint, which of course is rather expensive in itself as it has to be special high temp paint. Then the calipers need to go back on the car and the brake system bled.

This is not a simple job.

 

Go to your auto parts store and buy yourself a Duplicolor caliper paint kit for less than $20. Several colors to choose from. From four feet away, you wont be able to tell the difference and will last for three years or more. You will take pride in doing the job yourself---

It sounds about right for the amount of work he is going to have to do. it's your choice but I would go for the DupliColor way myself

 

If you want to have a car show quality paint job done on your calipers, $350 seems reasonable. Whether it is worth the extra $330 is up to you. If you are using OEM brake pads you'll have to wash them every few days to show off the quality difference.

 

DIY! Unless you want to fool show judges that you have a fancy set of brembos or some other multi-thousand $ caliper set, then having a little texture to your calipers is not that big a deal. Duplicolor is cool, but be sure to prep the metal properly. If you do this, then you'll have no issues with durability and it will look much nicer than stock. If I was you, I would rather spend the money on a couple cans of paint, metal primer, metal cleaner, and cross-drilled rotors $350 for the amount of work that is to be done is not bad at all, but it just is overkill for STOCK calipers.
