Joey Mod won't pass inspection!?!?

So my car is in the shop getting it's scheduled maintenance right now, and I just got a call from the service department. They called to tell me that my car won't pass NYS inspection because my "turn signals are painted black." My turn signals are not painted at all, although the rest of the housing is, besides the reflector. I have the halogen lights.

They did say they could swap them out for new ones, at a cost of $97, which actually isn't bad compared to what I thought that would be.

Has this ever come up in anyone else's inspection? It doesn't make sense to me. My turn signals are not affected by any of the painting I did.

What turn signals. The on on the side of the car or the one inside the headlight housing?

I have to take mine in for inspection Thursday. I'm going to go to one of the State inspection places. If the don't pass me I'll pay and go to the mechanic in my old home town. For people he knows on little things like Joey mods and lift kits he will look the other way. He passed many lifted trucks for me and my friends back in high school.

Is that only labor, because even just one new headlight costs several hundred dollars. If it really is $97 all-inclusive and you get to keep your old headlights, I'd grab it and run.

Yep, I lied! It was $97 for parts AND labor. But when the SA told me turn signals, I was only thinking about the headlights. The side marker ones on the side scuttles are what she was talking about. I didn't even realize it until I got home. I plasti-dipped them. The light still shines through, but it's obviously black not orange. I could have easily just peeled it off and had them do the free inspection. They didn't even mention the headlights being painted.

Oops!

Just peel the plasti-dip then re-do it after it passes inspection.
By the way, what is this inspection? Is this the Mini service your talking about?

Yep, that's the plan. And it's the yearly NY State Inspection. Do you not have those in CA? I know some states don't need to do it. It's annoying!

It's annoying but it should be mandated in every state. Since you have idiots that drive out there and don't know they only have 1 brake light or none at all. Let alone all the other parts they neglect.

you have yearly inspections? New cars in NJ get a 4 year sticker then after that it is still every 2 years.

Yep, we have to do it every year. On newer cars it only costs 8 or 10 dollars so it's not that bad.

Registration lasts 2 years I think.

Nope, not in CALI. No inspections. I'd like to keep it that way! Youd don't see violaters w/ brake lights missing or such as cops are pretty good about getting you if you have something that is obviously dangerous or not working on your car. We have smog checks every other year, ...cars that are pre 1972 or some year around there are exempt from smog checks. -A big reason why lot's of people out here buy older cars and hot rod them.
