I want to make mods to the exhaust without breaking the bank. Has anyone taken parts off their exhaust? I want to change the note without being obnoxiously loud, and of course add hp. I am mechanically inclined and have access to any tools I need.

Thanks fellow motorers,
Patrick

search for exhaust mods. I know for a fact people are cutting out section of their exhausts, and getting great results.

Crawl under your car and ake a close look at your stock Cooper exhaust sometime. It's pretty nice.

I have had it on a lift a couple of times just to check it out and show buddies. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it, but am looking to change it a little just like thousands of other people like to do to their MINI.

If you are serious about it, cut out the resonator and run new pipe to the rear (2.25 will do) Then get a Devil or other sport muffler. You will keep the back pressure and get the aggressive sound you probably want. Its a good bit cheaper than a new cat back and just as efficient

I had a shop chop my stock muffler off and fit an aftermarket muff for a total of $90 (muff + 2.5 pipe + labor). You can find muffs cheap on ebay. The shop provided and bent the 2.5 I requested. I had them step up the diameter from the stock 2" to the 2.5", see pic. The muff didn't come with hangers but they just positioned, hung hangers, then welded to the muff.

Nice job at a low cost and effective exhaust mod for an MC.
Other options for a bit more $$$ - an aftermarket or custom 4" or large exhaust tip although a stealth look is always a nice surprise.
How is the exhaust note with your setup?
The other exhaust mod that is about $80-100 for MCS is to chop off the resonator on the passengers side in the rear and route the tailpipe directly to the muffler then out the back. Saves weight, adds a few HP, increases the exhaust note and may add a few mpg. This nice mod doesn't really have an equivalent for the MC.

Another possible option for MC owners is to cut off the stock muffler and install the Devil from Diamond Racing which some owners have said worked fine. Cost is less than with a full cat back system for the MC.

The MC exhaust is $314
