How to charge iPod?

I just purchased a new Nano a few days ago. I have it loaded with music and have it attached to my Pioneer DEH-9800BT head unit. I did not install this head unit as it was there when I bought my Mini last month. Also there was an ipod cable sitting in the little cubby where the factory Aux is at. I am able to plug in my new ipod nano and get it to work just fine with no issues. However I am not able to charge it?!?! I was under the impression that this would also charge the ipod. What do I need to add in order to get the ipod to charge?

My goal is just to route the wire to the glove box and just leave the ipod in there at all times. Only plan to take it out when I want to add or remove some music.

I have looked on crutchfield.com and they have an adapter piece, but after reading about it, it will not charge the new ipods. Anyone have a way for me to get the ipod to charge??

I might have to go back and buy a used ipod now and sell this one if I can't get something to work. :(

Thanks,

Ken~

Apple changed the iPod charging method from firewire pinout to the usb pinout in the later generations. An adapter is available here. The 2nd Gen MINI iPod adapters that fit in the secret compartment (not the USB version) also have the same issue.

HMMMM, still confused I guess. Would help if I was able to see a different view of it, like both ends.

The ipod cable is already installed in the car on the back of the head unit. I then plug that into my new nano and can control it through the radio interface (Which works great). When I plug it in the nano will say that this unit can't be charged. Will this adapter in the link you posted work? I don't think it would, but I hope I am wrong

Thanks,

Ken~

AAHHH, now I see how it works. Sorry lost my mind there for a few while I waas posting. Went and looked it up online and can see it now. For some reason I was thinking one side would connect to the nano and the other side was just a usb port

Thanks for link. Going to be ordering one right away

Yep- the fourth gen Nano, the second gen iPod Touch and the iPhone 3G all have the same issue. Apples says the passPORT adapter will work though: http://store.apple.com/us/product/TS696LL/A
