Insurance

So I'm closing in on my MINI and recently spoke to my dad's insurance company (I'm 18). With the car in my name and the insurance and registration in his my quote was about 4300 for the year with Allstate. My dad has had that company for like 25 years now and doesn't want to change. That is a tad ridiculous, but not really undoable.
Being that I'm a kid and going to college in the fall, and have a girlfriend to spend as much time and money on as I can afford, I was wondering what companies I might look at to try and knock that number down. We own 2 cars already and soon to be 3 with the MINI. One is an '89 Buick Century and one is a '98 Toyota Sienna minivan.
What insurance companies should I look at?
Which ones such regardless of the price of the insurance?

Thanks guys, didn't wanna shop without a human opinion

I'm 20 and am paying $350/mo for my 03' MINI with Statefarm. Although, I do have quite a few points on the ole' license. Being young, being male, and driving a 'sports car' your rates are going to be high. (Although with a clean record I think your rate is a bit overly high.)

Try Geico if you're looking for cheap. I had Allstate and with Geico I pay less than half what I was for the exact same coverage.

Granted I bought mine when I was 24, never had a ticket or anything, but with Geico it was around $1000-1200(don't remember exactly) a year with good coverage. Obviously there are a lot of factors that go into the price, but 4300 sounds ridiculous.

That's what I found when I was searching. Geico was half of what any others were usually. Think there was one other that was only 300-400 more or so...but most were twice the price for the same coverage.

Oh, from everything I've heard, avoid Geiko like the plague! Everyone that I've talked to that has had to file a claim with them has horror stories of how awful the process was and how difficult it was to get back on the road.

I'm a 22 year old female with 1 ticket, 1 warning, and 1 collision on my record. I side-swiped our Suburban on the pillar between the two garages at my house. My parents have been with State Farm forever and we have never had any problems when we've filed claims. I'm paying $85 a month by staying on my parents' plan. Since the title was in both my dad's name and mine I was able to do this. If I had a separate policy it would be $95 a month, so yeah, you're getting ripped off. I had my credit union get estimates for me and no one came even close to what State Farm offered me.

Drive safe and make sure that whoever you go with will reward you for having good grades. State Farm gave me some sort of a discount each semester that I was in college because of good grades.

Good luck!

OP, Rather than looking around yourself, go to an insurance broker that handles multiple insurance companies and they can look around for you. This will give a better ball park for what you will be paying. Something like progressive insurance that advertises on TV.

Also, to reduce your rate somewhat, you can take those approved defensive driving classes.

I pay $468 a year with KY Farm Bureau for full coverage, I guess there are some advantages to being old

I dunno if you have it in your location but Erie insurance has good rates; just don't expect them to stand by you if you have an accident. From what I've heard they'll drop you like a bad habit after one accident.

Ok well I looked at Geiko and sure enough it was 4900 for both my car and 2 of my dad's. Allstate is 6200 for us both. My dad, however, refuses to change companies so I'm short that 100 bucks a month Geiko would save me...so I'm going to meet my dad halfway and ask him to give me 50 of those 100 dollars I'd save and see if he bites. If not I guess I'll just pay it.

quite the opposite of my experience of 6 years plus with GEICO. i've had to make claims twice on my old car (once for an accident i didn't cause; another for a break-in) and GEICO was quick to respond, courteous, and professional each time. same for my boyfriend, who switched when he realized he was paying about $150 more a year for his Titan's insurance with his previous provider. other friends who had GEICO have had similar experiences.

maybe the GEICO office in your state just doesn't have as much aloha as the one in mine? *shrug*

for the record, i pay $1100/year to insure my MCS.

I'm 20, and mine is in that ball park. It sucks being a young male with a sports car.

Well we love our cars, so we pay for it. I'm not paying for the car (my mom left me money to buy it) so I guess I can suck it up. I'll sleep better knowing I'm covered well and can support at least my car hobby.

Well im a girl so hopefully it wont be as bad. It just sucks that you might have the money and make enough for the monthly payment but in the end its your insurance that is prohibiting you from getting the car.

Have you considered just getting the insurance on your own? Apparently Allstate doesn't want you on your dad's policy, and they're making that quite clear with a very steep premium.
If you register the car in your name and insure it yourself, you may do better. Also, you may be able to carry a lower liability and a higher deductible to make your payments more affordable.
Also, as an earlier post recomended, get an independent agent to shop for you. Better still, go to two or three agents, and let them all shop for you. It's a lot of extra work, but if you can save a couple of grand a year it's worth the effort.
Finally, take the defensive driving course even if you've been recently licensed. Most states mandate an insurance discount once you complete this course, and it's only a couple of hours every three years. Over three years the course saves me about $600.00, which works out to about $100/hr to sit and watch some videos. With your steep premiums, the discount may be much more significant.
Good luck, and drive carefully! If you think your premiums are high now, just think what they'll be with tickets and accidents!

End Result

Statefarm in my name with my dad listed as a second household driver. $1640ish per 6 months along with a $16 per month life insurance policy that saves me more than that per month on car insurance

That's not too too bad. The insurance on my MCSC making its way out of the factory any day now will be $350/mo.

Wow... Well im happy you got somewhat what you wanted.

Still seems pricey though. I wouldnt be able to afford it on top of the car payment.
