Insurance
wow my insurance on my gp is about $440 every 6 months with high limits and a $1000 deduct, and i am a 22yr old female with one accident (at fault) and 1 ticket but that may be gone now.
I am still on my parents policy with state farm but still i was only paying like 200 for my other MINI when i had two because that one was a second car not considered my daily driver. So i was paying a total of about 800 every 6 months for both cars when i was only like 20 or 21 then i got rid of the second mini and my insurance went down. $350/ mo is a lot!

Last Thursday, I made a visit to my insurance company just so they could print me quote because I thought I heard it wrong. $384 every 6 months
. That is with their recommended coverage. My wife and I are both 25 (both of us, never issued a speeding ticket and no reported accidents) and my insurance is going to be less with the same coverage and more expensive car.

IMHO, blowing $4k/yr on car insurance is such a gross waste of money! As much as I'd love driving a brand new MINI at age 18, it wouldn't be worth it. Hell, that would have paid most of my college tuition!
Im 23 and insure an 09 MCS and an 00 BMW 323 with AAA for $900/yr. Two points on my record.
The key is to drive less (or quote w/ lower mileage), and use the vehicle for pleasure only. No commutes.
Factors that effect your auto insurance rates
1) Location - Cities are more expensive than country living but also the State you are in. You can move 1/2 over a state line and see drastically different rates.
2) Your age. Young is more expensive and gets less expensive as you get olded until you are about 75 and your rates will increase again.
3) Your experience. Over 3 years experience gives better rates.
4) Car you drive. Cost, performance, damagability. Cooper is good on all 3. The S you pay a performance surcharge.
5) Married - insurance companies love married couples.
6) Mutliple Cars
7) More Cars than drivers
8) Insurance Score - based on credit file. Important for states that allow.
9) Prior Limits - not all carriers do this but is becoming more important. If you buy state minimum limits you can probably pay less with higher limits and you will have better insurance. This is most important when trying to switch carriers, new carrier is surcharging because your present policy has lower limits. Try to use at least $100,000/$300,000/$100,000.
10) Driving record. More tickets and accidents more premium.

MINI-USA mailed me an invitation to apply for their MINI Insurance (through Liberty), but then their quote was higher than current policy (Teacher's Insurance Co). AARP's (The Hartford) on the other hand came in considerably lower, (12 mo. $560) so I think I will switch to them. 30 years ago, went back'n forth between GIECO and State Farm, each year they would beat the other quote, but then the next year, would be higher.
What puzzles me, is why the same rate for the more expensive and more powerful 'S' model, they only differentiate for coupe/convertible.

Thats a pretty good list/way of putting it for people. As an agent in Indiana I would suggest people find a reputable independant agent. They can shop around a bit. Good agents should find you a good price/coverage. From my experience and those I work with the rule of thumb with VERY little exception is that you get what you pay for. If one seems way cheap, there's probably a reason.
I currently pay about 750 for a year with 250/500/100 Liability, 500$ deductables, some little enhancment endorcements. There are 2 drivers (wife has the A4 company car) and a home supplying some discount. And despite what people may think, I'm not getting any discount for being an agent. The coverage is with Indiana Insuarnce/SafeCo which is an arm of Liberty Mutual. And for me it was cheaper than the "discount MINI and "Liberty" have arranged on the MINI USA site.
