You're probably not going to notice any difference with just new plugs, unless your current ones are absolutely rusty and horrible.

I've felt a difference, using them on my MCS.

Do you have the pulley in your car? If no i have an extra set of IK 20 than i've used for about 200 miles.

Randy say than he has notice 2hp.

I hope that help.

How about the shark, does it really works, do you feel the differance.

I live on Mexico City 2240 meters above sea level, every 1000 meters you lose 10% on power on aspirated engines, soo really helps supercharge or turbocharge engines here.

Thanks for your comments

We haven't seen any improvements on the dyno with any ignition performance mods. Plugs, wires, ignitions coils, and other ignition stuff don't improve performance that I've seen. Save your money for boost, breathing, and software.

Maybe the dyno numbers are small or might depend on the rest of your setup in Mods.
I have heard others say that they felt the MINI was smoother or they got a little better gas mileage.
I have the Pilo ignition upgrade set with colder plugs and wires/coil and also the M7 plasma booster.
I can't say I have noticed much difference and my mpg is about the same. I don't get worse performance and lower gas mileage.

This thread has migrated from the original question about Iridium spark plugs to a more general discussion on the benefits of aftermarket ignition systems. At this point, I feel that I should jump in and share my views.

Minihune has it right and I think that Eric is correct but is missing the point. The stock MINI ignition system is a state of the art production car ignition system that is super effective. Very little to improve upon here. There will be no detectable dyno improvements on MINI engines from anything short of a cosmic ignition upgrade, such as the true plasma ignition system from SmartFire: http://www.adrenalineresearch.com Eric is correct in that sense. But, Minihune and others are more correct: detectable and rewarding improvements in engine performance seem to be possible from ignition upgrades. They know that all engine improvements are not necessarily measureable on a dyno. I am referring to improved starting, and low speed and transitional performance. Improvement in these characteristics can materially improve the driving experience.

One factor to consider is what the durability over time of the various ignition upgrades that people are using compared to the stock parts. There is no way to tell except many users over time. I'm sure that this forum will be a place for this type of information to come out.

The stock MINI ignition may be a state of the art ignition system but, it's there because of the cost. The MINI uses a wasted spark system that has one coil firing two plugs. It can be improved upon easily... just as BMW does on their cars which has a coil for each plug which... is a great improvement. To stay on topic I don't think a plug is a plug because some plugs last longer than others.

CharlesWil,

You are correct that the stock MINI ignition reflects cost considerations. You are also correct that many of the high end domestic and imported auto manufacturers as well as a growing number of aftermarket ignition and engine management system suppliers are offering ignition and engine management systems that do not use the "wasted spark" system that we have in the MINI.

To imply that the single coil per spark plug system is "a great improvement" is non-sense. If you mean that the single coil per spark plug system and associated engine management system is potentially " a great improvement", then I agree 100% with you.

The reason for making this distinction is that we must not confuse the characteristics of any given ignition system with the characteristics of any given engine management system. One of the great leaps forward with modern engine engineering has been the close integration of these two systems - ignition and engine management.

In summary: more coils is not necessarily "a great improvement" over the stock MINI system. A more sophisticated and distributed engine management offers the potential for "a great improvement" over the MINI system.

Regards,

John Petrich in Seattle
