Smoked headlights? Any po-po problems?

I recent smoke tinted my tailights, and they look so nice. now i want to do the headlights. ive seen a few cars around with dark smoke headlights, but im not sure if they're legal. my neighbors cobalt is tinted, but has the xenon bulbs or what ever that are super bright. do you think there would be any trouble with that combination?

I have a strip of RED leds in my IC scoop that I used to drive around with at night. Just because I never got pulled over doesnt make em legal (which they arent). Now I only use the at autocross. Really though, it is going to depend on where you live.

Common sense would dictate that the mere act of tinting them shouldnt be illegal. This makes sense because there have been countless numbers of cars with pop up headlights. Rather what is going to matter is whether the light output is sufficient to be legal. Try telling that (and proving that) to an officer though.

You can contact your state's DMV and quickly find out if it's legal or not. Really what it will come down to is: Aare the police in your area bored? Or is the officer who pulled you over a V8 fanatic? If the answer to either "yes" then they will hassle the crap out of you.

Back in the 90's when headlight tints were the rage I had a couple of buddies get busted. They were hit with $350 fines and a letter to the insurance co from the state saying that they were operating a vehicle in an unsafe manner. The resulting 100% insurance rate hike for 4 years was a serious hassle.

So, if you like gambling and don't mind serious financial setbacks go for it!
