You can buy a cheap one and grind it down with a die grinder.

For $30 you can buy the socket and a cheap die grinder and come out ahead.

 

I bought a 36 mm socket from Sears for $5.99. Thought it may be a bit too deep so had machine shop take about .75" off depth, charged me $3.00. With hind-sight, socket would have probably worked fine without taking anything off depth. I figured $8.99 for shallow 1/2 drive 36mm socket not a bad investment.

 

I bought a 36mm 1/2 drive socket from the Real Source (A VW Mail Order Catalog) for $7.99 plus shipping.
