R56 Chip from rock in windshield
Chip from rock in windshield
So, this past weekend a rock flew up on the highway and put a crack/chip in my windshield. I just read some previous posts from older threads about some insurance companies covering it for free. I haven't checked w/ my company yet (Progressive) but will soon. I did check w/ the MINI dealership that i bought my MINI from a year ago and found out that they will not cover it (w/o parts and labor, etc of like $1100!)
Any other suggestions if my insurance company doesn't repair it for me?

Hope you have a low deductible. Most insurance companies have abandonded the practice of waiving the deductible to repair chips in the windshield. They were finding out that it didn't normally save the glass from having to be replaced later anyway.
Sorry... most won't. Five years ago ? Yes. Today ? No. Probably less than 20% will.
Thanks guys. I'll call my company today and ask them about it, for whichever scenario! I just dont wanna have a chip in my windshield, even though it is small -- plus, i dont want it to spread!

BTW... If "Joe" tells you that Ace Insurance Company waives the deductible for windshield chip repair and you also are insured with Ace, but in a different State, don't assume Ace will also waive your deductible.
In some States, the Insurance Dept will mandate companies do this, in other States, they leave it up to the Insurer to decide. So it will not only vary by Company, it will vary by State.

Ok, so i found out that my insurance company WILL cover to have my windshield repaired from the rock. Now -- I need to find a place to make the repair. Anyone have good reviews in the Rockville area? I think the ins rep mentioned "safe lite" or something but i dont know much about that.
I have had several repairs and a replacement or two done by SafeLite. They'll come to your home or work location and do it there. Always been satisfied.

Good luck, I've got three on my 07 so far. The two bigger ones were from this winter, which was one of the crappier winters we've had here in the northeast. Seems to me if you drive your Mini at all during the winter and live in a colder climate, chips are inevitable because of how vertical the windshield is and how low to the ground the front end of the car is. Luckily mine aren't very big or show any signs of expanding. If they do, that's when I'll have to get them fixed.

Thanks guys. I had it repaired by SafeLite last week. It's still a little noticable, but at least now it wont spread! The guy told me that in trying to repair it, he could actually make it worse and it could spread across the whole windshield!! I'm glad that didn't happen to the MINI!
He came to my work to make the repair. He had to call me outside to the parking lot because he couldn't find the MINI. It was hidden in between two big SUV's!

In AZ anyone can get their chips repaired free on the spot. The insurers fund a chip repair pool to ward off windshield replacements. So these dudes skulk at carwashes and spot your chips and bug you so they can fix them there. Their definition of a "chip" is pretty liberal IMO
. I think they bilk the ins cos a lot and send in little claims for whatever they can find.

Before -- a half inch diameter bullseye

After -- no it didn't leave a yellow circle! Only two tiny dots remained.
