If you didn't drive a MINI, what would you drive?

I get bored with cars easily, and often trade cars hoping to find "the car". Problem is that it's pretty hard to top the Mini. The VW GTI is a fine car, and some say a better value, but the car doesn't do it for me.

I love BMW coupes, but the price difference is significant, and I'm not sure it's worth it. I'd love an older exotic car - Acura NSX comes to mind. It's a great ride, reliable and relatively low upkeep costs. But it isn't as practical as a daily ride, and with two seats it is clearly targeted as a sports car.

So, if not the Mini, what do you choose?

a mid 80's 911 turbo. I always liked the "fat ***" look of those cars

I have my eye on the Z2 roadster development at present, but I am more than happy with my MINI.

Old Saab, Porsche 911, Lexus IS, Lotus Elise or a cast of thousands.

Well, if we are being honest I'd probably get a Hyundai Accent or something cheap and funtional. I mean, without a MINI what's the point???

I would probably get another Corvette or a Porsche.

If I couldn't have a MINI, I'd go back to my '99 M Roadster. Great car, but my MINI is even more fun to drive; and of course, more practical.

What car?

I like the Mini as well, but I would go back to my Porsche Boxster S in a second. It was arctic blue silver with every option and I hate that I was talked into getting rid of it.

My first reaction is the Elise but after seeing the Boxster perform on TopGear, maybe I'd consider that. In reality though...probably another MINI.

  • GTI (ubiquitous but nicely designed, much better seats than MINI, better steering wheel than even the JCW, quieter/smoother) for the new with a factory warranty choice.
  • Z4 3.0si used (the new one is too feminine) I've always been drawn to the unique design, tastefully executed interior and the N52 engine is a lightweight gem (better than the new iron-block twin-turbo!)
  • Lotus Elise used Is any explanation needed?
  • E46 330i ZHP I usually don't like silver cars, but this one in silver is the perfect understated sleeper if I needed something larger.

An '89 Porsche 930 would still be in the garage if I hadn't purchased my first MINI back in 2003.

The MINI has changed my outlook on cars a bit. If the MINI has never existed, I'd be driving something small and practical. The Honda Fit looks like a good candidate. After having MINIs, there's nothing that really does appeal which isn't a MINI, so I don't really know.

Our criteria for a car was "small, fuel efficient, hatchback", now I have to add "as fun to drive as a MINI", and I can't think of anything which isn't a MINI.

Hmmmm, Great topic! When considering this question, there's really two ways to answer; 1. What you would ideally love to drive 2. What would be most practical/realistic alternative

For me, the answer to #1. would be something like the Exige or Ariel Atom.

But if I was going to address #2: Maybe an Audi A3 or used S4; Or something a little more luxury and less thrill...and somewhat affordable.

Honestly, if I had never truly discovered MINIs I would probably have a little red GTI. They have grown on me a lot. In my dreams I'd have Porsches, Audis and Bimmers galore.

Test drove and considered the last Acrua RSX at the local dealer.

I suspect that my next car will be electric, or (preferably) hydrogen.
