If you didn't drive a MINI, what would you drive?

I get bored with cars easily, and often trade cars hoping to find "the car". Problem is that it's pretty hard to top the Mini. The VW GTI is a fine car, and some say a better value, but the car doesn't do it for me.

I love BMW coupes, but the price difference is significant, and I'm not sure it's worth it. I'd love an older exotic car - Acura NSX comes to mind. It's a great ride, reliable and relatively low upkeep costs. But it isn't as practical as a daily ride, and with two seats it is clearly targeted as a sports car.

So, if not the Mini, what do you choose?

a mid 80's 911 turbo. I always liked the "fat ass" look of those cars:thumbsup:

I have my eye on the Z2 roadster development at present, but I am more than happy with my MINI.

cadfael_tex May 7, 2009 07:14 PM

Old Saab, Porsche 911, Lexus IS, Lotus Elise or a cast of thousands.

OOOOO I forgot the Elise! OK Elise followed by the 911. There, much better

Ladidah May 7, 2009 07:20 PM

Honestly? Probably a Subaru of some sort.

gokartride May 7, 2009 07:23 PM

Well, if we are being honest I'd probably get a Hyundai Accent or something cheap and funtional. I mean, without a MINI what's the point???

ronnie948 May 7, 2009 07:24 PM

Corvette

I would probably get another Corvette or a Porsche.

Another MINI? :sly: Or my other car, my TR6!

If I couldn't have a MINI, I'd go back to my '99 M Roadster. Great car, but my MINI is even more fun to drive; and of course, more practical.

ckranert May 7, 2009 08:45 PM

What car?

I like the Mini as well, but I would go back to my Porsche Boxster S in a second. It was arctic blue silver with every option and I hate that I was talked into getting rid of it.

DarrenO'sideCA May 7, 2009 09:02 PM

My first reaction is the Elise but after seeing the Boxster perform on TopGear, maybe I'd consider that. In reality though...probably another MINI.

WRX STi, Audi RS4, M3

lovethecorners May 7, 2009 09:08 PM

  • GTI (ubiquitous but nicely designed, much better seats than MINI, better steering wheel than even the JCW, quieter/smoother) for the new with a factory warranty choice.
  • Z4 3.0si used (the new one is too feminine) I've always been drawn to the unique design, tastefully executed interior and the N52 engine is a lightweight gem (better than the new iron-block twin-turbo!)
  • Lotus Elise used Is any explanation needed?
  • E46 330i ZHP I usually don't like silver cars, but this one in silver is the perfect understated sleeper if I needed something larger.

M!N!-ME May 7, 2009 09:19 PM

I think I would roll with the Audi RS4http://pictopia.com/perl/get_image?p...oto_id=4509590
, a Subaru STihttp://image.automotive.com/f/tech/9...i+on_track.jpg
, or Lotus Exige Shttp://www.babez.de/lotus/exigesgt/l...tion-titel.jpg
.....so hard to choose....all great driver's cars

Oxybluecoop May 7, 2009 09:47 PM

An '89 Porsche 930 would still be in the garage if I hadn't purchased my first MINI back in 2003.

BMW M3. Nothing more nothing less.

The MINI has changed my outlook on cars a bit. If the MINI has never existed, I'd be driving something small and practical. The Honda Fit looks like a good candidate. After having MINIs, there's nothing that really does appeal which isn't a MINI, so I don't really know.

Our criteria for a car was "small, fuel efficient, hatchback", now I have to add "as fun to drive as a MINI", and I can't think of anything which isn't a MINI.

X2! nicely said

Hmmmm, Great topic! When considering this question, there's really two ways to answer; 1. What you would ideally love to drive 2. What would be most practical/realistic alternative

For me, the answer to #1. would be something like the Exige or Ariel Atom.

But if I was going to address #2: Maybe an Audi A3 or used S4; Or something a little more luxury and less thrill...and somewhat affordable.

thulchatt May 8, 2009 06:15 AM

The new 370Z.

bigsoup52 May 8, 2009 06:55 AM

A Corvette Z06, an American hand-made legend.

exposition May 8, 2009 08:37 AM

Honestly, if I had never truly discovered MINIs I would probably have a little red GTI. They have grown on me a lot. In my dreams I'd have Porsches, Audis and Bimmers galore.

Robin Casady May 8, 2009 09:16 AM

Test drove and considered the last Acrua RSX at the local dealer.

I suspect that my next car will be electric, or (preferably) hydrogen.
