Defenders Of Speed Intake! Review!

So I jumped on the DoS Intake because to me it looked as though it could get more cool air than the Alta I was currently running. My initial thoughts are....an intake is an intake! But seriously the design seems to fit the bill of being able to get more fresh air than some of the other intakes. I love the look, and the fit and finish is awesome! As for people that want a quiet intake this is "NOT" for them. When you step on it, you can really hear the suction of air through the filter because the sound now comes out directly under the window. It is sweet though, and overall I am much more happy than I was with the Alta. Not that the Alta is a bad unit, just wanted something with a little more.....attitude!

That's pretty cool. Did you fab that part on the entry point of the intake? Or does that foam liner come with the intake?

I'm sure the suction is much louder now. Even with my m7 its loud, and that's in a box!

At what volume of water being sucked into the intake, is there a worry of having problems?

It really does looks like a nice design.

On my TT supra, i had a TRD hood and the vent on top of the hood sat right over the filter. I drove through many monsoons and had 0 issues with water. Now if you take a huge GULP like you do with a cold air intake can do at times then yes, it can be a problem.

i figured if the intake isnt fastened down with a screw or watever... the boost tube and maf is gonna keep tapping on that strut...

I didn't debadge my engine. I just got it back from the shop where I had the PnP head and new valve cover put on. I've got to ask my buddy at MINI to hook me up with a new MINI Badge, but don't mind not having the oil sticker.
As for taking in water, I really doubt you would get much more than you would from the alta with the M7 Vortex hood scoop. I actually initially thought the part below the wipers was like the 1st gen, but it's not at all. If you go and look the air vent is actually protected somewhat by the hood, so water getting in there doesn't seem like a big concern. And last but not least yes the rubber comes with the intake. It is a very nice piece. It also connects to the stock intake tube on the bottom of the filter, so you get the best of both worlds.

As for the MAF hitting the strut bar, I haven't had any problems. The filter is really pretty tight in the hole, so the movement will be minimal! The filter pushes against the hole, and it kind of creates a wedge in there.

Cool, I was wondering if you'd have to worry about water funneling/pooling in that area during a heavy rain. I know through the scoop it's no worry.

Although, there is that rain guard above it to prevent the surface area of the windshield from pooling right into that cavity.

This setup really interests me, currently I have the Alta. I like that the defender setup eliminates a bend and it seems like a better source of cool air. +100 degree weather runs straight for weeks at a time here during the summer, and this would seem to bypass all that heat buildup under the hood on those days.

Yep 100 degree weather in the summer here too, that's why I thought I would upgrade to something that seemed to not be a Hot Air Intake.

Have you noticed any weirdness with your vents btw? lol

Smells, etc... That's where the fresh air is drawn in for the vent right?

I don't know what you mean? Like smells in the car? If that is your question nope not anymore. The reason I say that is because when I put on the intake, my downpipe had just been put on too. So the heat wrap was creating a pretty "sweet" smell. Now that the wrap has been put through it's paces and is "burned" in, I don't smell anything. Why do you ask? I have also thought of buying an intake pre filter, and putting it over the opening for that extra added security of not having water ingested. But like I have stated, I really don't think it is an issue...but I just like added safety.

As for pics not on the car, I don't have any. But if you go to the website http://www.defendersofspeed.com/stor...p?id_product=6 and look at the 3rd picture you get an idea of how it is setup. The part he is holding onto is the tube that hooks to your stock intake vent, that sucks air from the front of the car. It really does seem to be one of the better thought out systems out in my opinion. Just my 2 cents.

haha, I was kinda joking. Actually, I need to stop and look at that opening next time I get in my car. I was curious if you noticed any disrupted vent pressure or anything like that.

It's a silly question I know. hahaha

I don't know why I asked about smells. The cabin air filter would get rid of anything minor anyway.

The only real worry I have is a situation where you get drenched by a passing car and whether I'd have to worry about the intake taking a gulp of water if it drains into that cavity. Not things like heavy rain, but hell it's not that hard to accidentally get water dumped in there on a relatively slow turn into a deep puddle either. I dunno, it's a pretty remote possibility I'm sure.

My curiosity is piqued!
