Wow cool. I haven't seen anybody replace a head on a R56? Whats the deal? Bigger valves? Who made it? Whats the final goal?

Smoother flow, and once Jan is done with his R56 tuning I'm gonna have him tune me up and possibly do a turbo upgrade. 1fastmini did it, and I have to say it looks NICE! I'm sending him my stock head, and he will probably have more to sell later on, I'd imagine. The ultimate goal....around 275-280 at the wheels! We shall see!

Nope didn't have a chance. But when Jan tunes me up, I will post all of the dyno charts. I am excited that the beast is finally going to be able to come to life!! I'm thinking I will have Jan tune me up with what I have on the beast now, and then do the larger turbo upgrade a few months later.

Hey Thumper, you think its possible to hit 300 with an upgraded turbo and a REAL tune like Jan's?

Basically, what I'm trying to say is do I have to get port and polished and upgrade the engine internals to achieve 300whp? I feel anything over 300 makes it not so much a practical daily driver lol, but I could be wrong...

Until we see what Jan's tunes are getting I don't know. I'm sure they'll be the best out of anythng though, cuz they always are.

But I'd think with a GT28RS and tune you'd be around 300whp. I know the GTI's using GT28rs' are around there and even north of 300. About the engine internals....I'm not sure. We won't know until people start pushing the limit and breaking stuff .

But yea, I don't want that much power. The MINI is my only car at the moment and 300+whp in it would be too annoying for everyday driving in my opinion. One of my friends has one of the 2.0L RMW cars, and he's only putting out 250ish whp, 220 ish torque...and even that is a monster. Granted, the torque curve and hp curve are completely different than a 250 whp R56 would be, but still...300 is more than you'd ever need. I think I'd be happy with like 260 ish hp...but who knows, once you get it its never enough!

Depending on the results of this head...I think a car with the head, full exhaust, IC, tune, and slightly larger turbo...like a K04 or GT25 would be wonnnnnnderful and very streetable/driveable.

Breaking stuff, I guess that is for sure one way to tell

Okay, I just wanted to be clear on that and you seemed like you knew what you were talking about...Don't want to hijack, but thanks for the info.

To thumper and masterd, what turbo you thinking about running? Since I know you both will eventually get one...just like I will! I keep saying next summer I'll do it, but if the tune and Turbo are done by June, I'm gettin both asap!

I really have my eye on the GT28RS, but the K04 or GT25 would be nice too. I've just got to decide how much real world day to day power I want. But I'm not complaining about that problem! As for an ETA from Jan, don't have one yet....but our club is in the process of working some tune time out with him asap. I will keep you posted as soon as I know you will know. Oh by the way dtsoccer6 I'm gonna get the white O.Z.'s! Buying them now!!

Sick dude! I can't wait to get my OZs on...those are going to look insane on your ride man.

Well at least we have a nice variety of Turbo's available to us. Jan did mention how we were going to be surprised on how we don't need go big to get the most power. Hopefully he means his tune will make up for it and we can get smaller turbos which require less modification...

Exactly, that's why I think I would go with the tune first and then look into the upgraded turbo if I thought I needed it!

You need to post dynos when you put it on. Make sure to log air fuel.

FWIW I think this is not going to show much of a peak gain. I'm interested to see what it'll do to the midrange and area under the curve. Make sure to dyno the car pre cylinder head. I really don't think the gains will be very much because the turbo is pretty tiny. I think a good test would be stock boost vs stock boost pre and post cylinder head with a nice series of dynos in similar conditions.

If it proves to be anything like the r53 heads. There will be alot gained.

Any updates?

I've had my car back for a day and a half. The ecu is still re-adapting to the new head. But my initial takes on it, along with the exhaust depot downpipe are....much smoother throttle response, quicker turbo spool with less lag, and the power hits alot quicker. Not to mention it just feels almost, more should I say refined. I haven't had a chance to get to a dyno, and don't have any dyno graphs of my car stock. But I am awaiting the amazing tunage by Jan, and look to see some sweet gains.

So in closing, I would say the head and downpipe are definatley worth it. The car feels like a whole different animal, that is more refined and quicker on it's feet.

I'm curious about something. Obviously with headwork, you'll get more fuel flow.

The ECM will make minor adaptions as it sees fit. Will the ECM be able to adapt to something as drastic as doing head work?

I know you're waiting on a tune from Jan (aren't we all? lol) but I just didn't see the ECM making that many changes.

Thanks,

Mark

PS. Glad it made it made it worthwhile, that's a decent amount of work with apparently, great results.

+1 - good question - how adaptive is the ecu?

If its anything like the VWs it can vary fuel one way or the other about 20-25%.
