Black Wow and the Pea
Black Wow and the Pea
OK, I've used BW a few times now and I still don't see how folks can do the entire trim set with just "a couple of pea sized drops". What applicators are folks using? I've used both the standard yellow foam ones as well as the blue Paradise Skinny. Both soak up so much that It takes a "pea sized drop" for pretty much every piece of trim. I've tried stretching it out but the effectiveness is clearly gone after I go more than 18-24 inches of trim.
I use the very corner of a cheap, thin utility microfiber towel - pretty much just a fingertip-sized section of the towel. That way, it doesn't soak up much, and if I really need to scrub on a spot to remove some wax or other staining, I have the sewn edge of the towel to provide extra "bite".
I can't really quantify how much BW I use each time, but I know that I did the complete trim set on four MINIs before the level dropped to the "shoulder" of the bottle.

Just to add a bit of trivia here...the bottles say 4 Fl Oz. on them. I fill them to half way up the shoulder which really amounts to 5 Fl Oz. When it's even with the bottom of the shoulder..so everything up to that is "extra".
The amount you use is enough that you can apply it to the trim and not have any excess. Depending on your trim, you might need several pea sized drops or more or less. What's important is that you don't apply too much at once and really work it in.

That's good to know. Of course, being sparing with the BW didn't do me much good because my still-almost-full bottle disappeared out of my luggage during a flight a few months ago. So I'm probably one of the only non-professional users that's already on his second bottle of BW!

You weren't flying Continental were you? lol. There was a news segment on huge theft rings going on by baggage handlers at different airlines.
Maybe the future of Black Wow will be 1 ounce containers or eye droppers measured in ML.

I can't remember which carrier I was flying, but I had the BW in the outside pocket of my range bag, and when my bag came down onto the carousel, the pocket was half-unzipped and the BW was gone. I don't know if someone snitched it or if the pocket just came unzipped during handling and the bottle fell out. Is BW flammable? I also considered that it might have been seized as a prohibited liquid, but I'd think they'd leave a note behind if they did that.
As long as BW doesn't "spoil", the current 4-oz (5-oz) bottle is fine - I just need to make sure I don't lose this one!

BW isn't flammable as far as air safety is concerned. Liquids are permitted on checked in luggage. Heck, I've taken cases of BW and hundreds of BW samples in my luggage for events, lol, and I always got my bag searched because they would see my power tools there as well.
re: shelf life
BW should last literally forever. It won't spoil. If it freezes, unlikely where you live, but if it did, it returns to normal at room temperature.
Course I wouldn't mind you buying one atleast once every 4 or 5 years rather than only one...lol. I won't be around for very long unless I can get everyone on the planet to own a bottle, lol.

I was really hoping you'd make it to AMVIV so you could demonstrate for me 'cuz I ain't getting it. Maybe next year. Or if you're back in town sometime...

The problem is that the amount necessary is going to be dependent on your specific situation. If you start off with a pea sized amount and the applicator soaks it up, well then it makes sense you need to apply more.
Pea sized amount refers to the amount that will actually be needed on the trim.
When I was at Detail Fest, I showed people how a tiny dab...taken from the top edge of the bottle after taking the cap off, was enough to cover a very large area. I used the MF Skinny's as the applicator.
Have you watched the Black Wow video yet?
Seems you're not quite understanding that the amounts we are referring to are the amounts that get applied to the plastic. We try to specify small amounts because most people apply way too much product...as in quarter or silver dollar sized globs.
How do you know there is excess? Well it's pretty obvious. The end result is a matte black finish..slightly wet looking upon first application. If it's shiny, glossy, and very wet...well you have WAY too much.
re: AMVIV
Just couldn't afford it this year...the time nor the costs plus with a slipping clutch..didn't want to risk being stranded. However one of my MINI friends just relocated to Vegas..so I may end up visiting her at some point in the near future. lol.

OK, but it was your postings that refer to such small amounts. My trim is in pretty good shape, yet the BW all disappears from the applicator (or soaks in) before I reach the end of the first trim piece. IF there's excess left behind (and btw how do I tell??) I can't seem to move it forward. If I put less on the applicator (i.e tiniest possible drop) It appears to have no effect.

I title of this thread makes me think it's a children's story... Black Wow and the Pea. Perhaps something along the lines of the Princess and the Pea?? Or, Black Wow and the Beanstalk?? The possibilities are endless.

I have those too, and like them for applying BW *if I don't need any of its cleaning properties*. The foam applicators are nice for applying an even coat, but you can't really bear down on them to scrub a wax stain out of the textured trim pieces. That's why I've gone to using the corner of a microfiber towel - I can switch as needed between just wiping the BW on and really scrubbing it in with the sewn edge of the towel on the stubborn spots.
Consequently, I usually end up using too much BW. hmmmm....
