Swapping a old HU for a 2005 HU

Okay, I want to upgrade my 2003 head unit to the 2005 that plays MP3s and has the aux plug for the ipod. But I'm slightly dumb, do I have to purchase the Mini AUX plug for the secret compartment, or do I just need the cable to connect the ipod to the stereo? I don't get how it works? Can someone please enlighten me!

There are two ways to connect an iPod to the stereo using OEM kits. You can either use the AUX-in connection, or you can use the factory iPod adapter that basically makes the head unit think the iPod is a CD changer. Then there are aftermarket adapters like the DICE kit.

If I were starting from scratch like you are, I'd go with one of the aftermarket kits. Like the OEM iPod adapter, you'll get better sound than using the AUX input, but unlike the factory iPod adapter, you'll get track/title information displayed on your head unit. You'll also be able to use the iPod's controls to select songs/track/etcetera, which you can't do with the factory iPod. (When you connect the iPod to the factory adapter, its controls are locked out.) I think the DICE kit also provides an AUX input as well.

However, the basic AUX cable is inexpensive ($40), compared with iPod interfaces that are $100-$200 ... also, they still need an '05+ HU for their track/artist displays to work.

So if I have a 2005+ HU and buy the inexpensive AUX cable, will my MSFW work the ipod, or will I still have to manual change the iPod?

The MFSW will raise/lower the volume, but the "previous track" and "next track" buttons won't control a device connected via the AUX input.

Tha AUX cable is just an audio input, no controls. Same as plugging headphones in to the iPod.

So the only difference with the 2005 HU is the text on the display?

That, and the ability to play MP3 CDs.

And the text capability on the display won't do you any good with any of the OEM adapters. You have to go with something aftermarket like the DICE kit before you'll get any artist/track information on the display.
