I come from the audi world, and one of our awesome vendors did a 4day detail on a cooper s, using some very high end products - you can read about it in the thread... the guys got some skill!

That's pretty detailed. Black Wow in the engine compartment. Never thought of that one.

Now THAT is a professional detailing job... not what some of those "pros" out there pass off as a full detailing.

Now... are you going to try to maintain that appearance yourself ? Or will you just get the pro to do it again in six to twelve months ? The initial investment in materials is pretty steep, but you'll save yourself a good chunk of cash over time if you DIY. And it's not that hard, really.

BTW, did you also post this in the Detailing Forum ? You'll get a lot more responses there.

and yes, i detail my car myself, but never have i spent 4 days detailing it. 8 hrs has been my longest, interior, exterior, engine, etc etc
lol i cant imagine 4 days... gawddd

 

4 days is relative...I could spread out a single 18 hour day over 3 days at 6 hours a day if I wanted.

This is what can be done to a MINI in 9 hours. To me this is more impressive. And yes this was for the entire exterior including PDR work..though PDR was not by me. And I did the work for free as a birthday present to the owner.

Oh yeah, didn't even notice that's not your MINI. I think this nasty flu bug is affecting my brain. Don't worry, it's not an e-bug.

 

Looks beautiful, but in the end, not all that hard. I could do the same provided I had the same tools. Detailing is less about the detailer, and more about the tools.

 

Sorry, but it's both. If you don't know how to properly use that buffer or have the right polish/pad for the job, you might as will be trying to get perfect paint with your kitchen towel.

Takes the right tools, the right products, and someone who knows how to use them. Although learning how to use them isn't too tough.

 

At the professional level, I'd say that learning not to make serious mistakes is what makes detailing difficult and scary. And I disagree. It is more about the user than the tools. If it weren't then any pro who uses a rotary or a pc should be getting similar results but the fact is they aren't. Product choice, knowledge, and technique for the right application is what sets apart those who know how to detail/paint polish from those who just know how to wash and wax a car.

Detailing isn't hard--but it is hard physical labor. At the production detailer level, you might be considered more accurate than what either Phil (the guy who did this 4 day detail) or myself do.

3rd. if the user doesn't know what they're doing, give them a PC and they can easily burn through clearcoat in no time with an abbrasive polish and pad, by applying too much pressure, leaving it on a spot for too long, etc, etc.
I can say I can get my car pretty darn clean, but give me top of the line stuff and I'd still be halfway scared to use them

 

Actually, it's pretty hard though not impossible to burn paint with a PC. With a rotary, no problem. I demonstrate this to my students all the time.

 

Hopefully not to a customer's car! You do amazing work, OctaneGuy!

 

A four day detailing job with one six pack:
Day 1: Call in sick to work, wash car & drink a beer - call it a day & watch soaps
Day 2: Call in sick to work, clay car & drink a beer - call it a day & watch soaps
Day 3: Polish car & drink a beer - call it a day & watch some college sports
Day 4: Wax car & drink 3 beers - call it a day & watch some professional sports

Haha thanks!! Oooh, no, not on customers cars. I have spare painted MINI parts that I demo the power and danger of the rotary when doing my Saturday garage classes to those that want to see it.

Burning paint can be really easy on certain parts of the car and more difficult on others. Like I said before, learning not to make serious mistakes comes from experience and sometimes some mistakes aren't immediately evident..what if a detailer dangerously thins the paint though it looks fine to you..but down the road you get premature clear coat failure??? That $200 detail suddenty costs you thousands in new paint, time lost for having the car at the body shop and potentially substandard work, lol. Customers just don't realize the importance of who touches their paint.
