Want to add a 5 point harness for track days

Hey Folks
I am looking to add a 5 point harness for auto X and track days. What I am looking for is a system I can install and remove when I am not using it so I can use the standard seat belt and not have the interior cluttered with the 5 point harness. Anyone know who makes a good set up like this?

Perhaps a rear seat delete kit will also be useful to you, shave a few pounds off the car. And you can get one with attachment points for the harness too.

I think I found what I like from Sparco...

I have the Schroth in mine and it works great. It goes in and out in under 5 minutes.

Not to highjack, RedBull, but I really wish they'd get ON with testing the 2007+ seats for safety - get the schroth harnesses out there for us, without having to modify them. I'm waiting (not so patiently) for the quick fit. I've only seen quick fit (easy in, easy out) for four points, not five...Good luck, RedBull!!

5 points on stock seats are a bad idea. There's no slot in the stock seat base for the sub strap. Most organizations will not allow 5 or 6 point belts on stock seats.

You may be right...however I see many running the 5 point and anchoring the sub strap to the floor. What orginozations would you be refering to? SCCA?

So I am still looking for a source for the harness bar....want a removable one..any suggestions anyone?

S - I spoke to the folks at Schroth last week and they said that the testing has been completed on the R56 seats and now they are being held up waiting for some leagal work to be finalized. They say there hands are tied and can not go into production until whatever needs to be settled is done. No guesstimate as to when that might be either I was told. I might just opt for the R53 model and trim the plastic piece as others have as oposed to waiting much longer. Detroit Tuned advertise: "Schroth Harnesses delivered at the Dragon will include FREE installation! (A $40 value!)" I wonder if that includes the slight mod for R56 install?

Yes, you can anchor the sub strap to the floor. But, how is the sub strap going to get from the buckle to the floor without a slot in the seat base? Running it around the front of the seat bottom cushion doesn't work. Neither does running it back and between the seat bottom and seat back. I have tried both when I had a rollbar and 6 point belts but no race seats. Neither one felt safe enough for me to actually use, and I just used the stock seat belts until I was able to put race seats in my car.

I know the local to me BMWCCA does not allow 5 or 6 point belts on stock seats. I'm not sure about other organizations, but I'd definitely check before spending money.

Snid...thanks, you know I have driven cars with race seats and overlooked the fact the it runs thru the seat not around it. I am going to do some more homework before I spend a dime. Ultimately I want a good safe setup and a system I can use for the track and remove for the street...that is the goal. Thanks for the info

If Schroth has in fact got approval from a testing agency for the quick fit system by all means go with it. You will not find a harness bar that is removable as there are no mounting points in the car for it, unless you wanted to fab something up for yourself.

Only problem with the Schroth system before this was the question of whether or not the seat was designed to handle the loads from the belt.

FYI on the Quickfit 4-point harness (sorry to hijack again RedBull!) I wrote to Detroit Tuned (thanks Paleo!) to ask if they had any update and/or if they'd do the Quickfit (plus mod) installation at MOTD for the 07s anyway. Here's their answer (and I can't blame them.)

"At the moment, Schroth is still doing testing for the 07+ MINIs. I've got
another call into the US supplier to beg and plead for them to be here in
time.

The problem is the rear buckle. The R53 harness WILL fit your car with minor
modification. However, I do not feel safe putting my name behind said
modification even if it is not a structural change. (Some decorative plastic
needs to be removed off of the buckle.)

If you want an R53 belt, I would be happy to bring you one... but that's all
I can do."

There is some great advice here in this thread. If you are willing to run an anti-sub, may I suggest you go to a 6pt instead or a 5pt? It is safer and, uhmm - more comfortable.

Schroth make excellent harnesses, in fact the Quick Fit series is especially good for the MINI owner who wants to retain the stock seats. Of course the 2nd gen cars are still not approved for use with this belt. I am anxiouisly waiting for Schroth to release it as well.

Another option to consider is the CG Lock. It bridges the gap between stock belts and a race harness. It is an inexpensive way to hold your hips in place during spirited driving. Learn more here: CG Lock.

Here is a video of the install: Clicky-click & Another Video

One drawback to the CG lock is the lack of upper body restraint. I found myself still using the wheel to support my upper body through the turns. I actually prefer the old "yank on the belt to lock it in place" instead, but the Schroth is the best.

You probably already know this but it's worth repeating for those who don't know. BMWCCA requires both the driver and instructor's seat belts to be identical. So if you put five point for the driver you must also do so for the passenger side. I usually do track days with the Porsche club and I am going to look into their specific rules as well. Now of course if you are past the stage where you need an instructor the above is moot.
