USS Hornet - USS Pampanito Field Trip 01/17/09

January is often a rainy month, so what better time is there for a field trip to two of the most historic naval sites in the Bay Area

We had a very successful field trip to the USS Hornet on Sunday March 5, 2006 where we had about 35 participants! Its been awhile, it was an extremely popular tour, and now the museum offers so many more attractions plus we decided to add a little more fun to an already exciting field trip and add in a trip to the USS Pampanito at Pier 45 in Fisherman's Wharf after lunch.

After the tours, members can meet in the city for dinner or head home. I am sure discussions will be following in this thread.

We will meet in the IKEA parking lot in Emeryville at 9:00 am and leave to arrive at the USS Hornet by 9:45am. The ship museum opens at 10am.

The USS Hornet is permanently anchored at the former Naval Air Station in Alameda, the ship is open daily, 10:00am – 5:00pm. There is ample free parking for automobiles and tour buses.

Please RSVP on the REME calendar tp participate in this exciting field trip. Please RSVP separately to participate in a catered lunch on the USS Hornet

Climate, Recommended Clothing

San Francisco can be foggy and windy at any time of the year. Visitors should wear layers since the climate can change very quickly. The Bay Area is known for its microclimates which can change dramatically from neighborhood to neighborhood. The warmest months tend to be September and October. November to April or May is considered the rainy season. The average annual temperature is 62.5F (16.9C).

Blessed with near record temperatures of 70F, clear blue skies, no wind, prefered parking along side the USS Hornet in Alameda, and the best retired US Navy veterans serving as our tour guides, near 50 of us boarded the historic USS Hornet for a wonderful day. Since we had such a big group we were "catered to". We had the hot catered lunch in the Wardroom galley. Hope you all got some great photos. Even got to ride the aircraft elevator from the hanger deck to the flight deck.

Our meetup point at Ikea in Emeryville worked out well with the fire department bringing their giant hook & ladder truck and rasing and climbing the ladder so they could get "arial" photos of all our MINIs in the parking lot.

Thanks to everyone that attended. It was a fun, interesting, and informative day. Hope you enjoyed as much as I did.

Field trips like this really take a lot to put together coordinating times and especially meals. Thank you all that worked with me to try to make this as seamless as possible. I am surprised we were able to keep it as organized as it was.

I did not know what to expect with the "catered meal" and although it was not what I had expected, I certainly was not disapointed, but I guess I was expecting the food to be served on trays rolling across a stainless steel counter with burly guys with tatoos on the lower arms tossing spoons full of food onto a tray, grunting "next". I did have a good meal and have to say the "second" serving was about 3x the size of the first serving and I left the room very full.

I often say that some of my most favorite parts of our runs is getting lost at least once on each trip. This was not my intention from going from IKEA to the USS-Hornet, I am very sorry to any members or guests that had difficulty reaching the Hornet including my own wife and daughter who were lost driving around in Oakland. Oakland is the last place in the world that I would want to see one of our members driving aimlessly after the local masses were rioting (as reported to me while we were sitting in the IKEA parking lot considering alternative routes). I am glad that all eventually reached the ship without harm.

Our original intention was to visit the sub USS Pampanito after our visit to the Hornet. After lunch was over, most participants were already tired and had left and the rest polled were happy to limit the day to just the Hornet. If any of you were disappointed about missing the Pampanito, I am sorry for not continuing to the sub, but we can always incorporate it into a future event.

I had a great time. This was the fourth time that I have visited the ship and the second time we organized this as an REME club event. I hope all had as much fun as I did. I especially hope that our newer members ere not disappointed with their first REME event. Photos of the event can be viewed and downloaded from the REME MegaBBS Photo Gallery.

Our monthly events are usually driving... lots of driving at a brisk but not dangerous pace on country mountain, valley, and coastal roads. I encourage you all to join us on our February run. This will be more representative of our typical monthly event.

Once again, thank you to all that participated. It does take a few to organize each event, but it is not an event without participants, so participating is more important than the planning itself. I look forward to seeing you all in February in Sebastopol.
