New Speedometer in an 09 MC?

So I have an 08 MC but had a 09 MC as a loaner for the day. I noticed that the speedometer in an 09 now has the 80 mph in the middle (under the seat belt indicator) as opposed to the 07 and 08 MC which has 70 mph in the middle of the speedometer - I know that the MCS is like that but hadn't heard about it and just thought I'd throw it out there.

interesting. 70 is more useful in the middle when quickly double-checking my speed on the highway since 80 will get you a ticket. i guess if i had a mcs, i would have different standards.

Hmm... maybe they standardized the speedo for both the MC and MCS?

I was actually just thinking about that yesterday... whether the speedometers were different between MINI models like they are on Mustangs, or if the MC just has a speedometer that shows a lot higher speeds than it can actually go.

I have an 08 MCS and my 70 mark isa straight up. Do I have the right one? The way you guys talk I feel like you are saying that the MC has always had spedo like that and now changed. That the MCS should have a 160 spedo.

Maybe that's for all 09's - now that I think about the MCS I was comparing to ....it is an 09 so perhaps they've all been revamped.

You'd think some people with '09's would pop in and tell us how their speedo is set up

I mean, I'll answer in a couple weeks, but shouldn't this be an easy thing to confirm? I mean... with thousands of MINI owners cruising this forum?

The new speedometer was introduced this year as an exclusive feature of the factory JCW, but starting with '09 model year it became standardized across the entire MINI line.

So, what are the changes of this new speedometer?

Just a change to the numbering due to a higher "top speed" shown on the speedo?

It makes sense if you think about it... Before the JCW, the speedo just had to be high enough for the MCS, so the MC and MCS shared the same speedo (I assume based on "2008 Cooper S"s comment)... but when the JCW came along, the speedo had to be standardized to a higher displayed top speed.

So, what IS the highest speed shown on the new one?

Ha... I just happened to stumble onto this post in a totally unrelated thread...

Basically, just consolidates the info we have.

Also, I'm still wondering if there are any other changes?

I can confirm that the '09 MCS has the 160mph speedo with 80mph at the 12 o'clock position. There were several threads on this a couple of months ago.
Works for me as I generally drive 79mph on the interstate and I usually look at the digital readout in front of me.

Right, thats because the 09s go 10 miles an hour faster.

While a 160 mph speedo may be cool, i'd rather have the 70mph mark at the 12 o'clock position myself.

I can't even look at the speedo over there. I just use the digital one on the tach.
