R53 gearbox in an R50???

It is possible to build a R53 gearbox into a R50?

My Cooper (R50) was built 2005

Does someone have information about such a change?

Thanks
BJ

We have just that write-up in our "powertrain" reference that may help.

Im about 90% complete with the swap. Im just waiting on dust seals for my 1/2 shafts.... I didnt even follow the DIY TSW wrote up. I just got the parts list and went to town. It is a straight forward swap...

As they already told you, it can be done. I'm working on it too, searching the needed parts so that I have all ready and can minimize the time the car is unavailable.

It's in the transmission listings under powertrain.

those must be the backordered dust seals that mini usa cant offer a delivery time on. they assured me they will be in whenever they get shipped from germany and that could be days or months.

fortunatly for me the shafts I bought came with them.
bear in mind that the r50 shares dust seals with the r53 on one side but not on the other.

but the best advise I can give is to make sure you have the complete parts list before you begin. my car has been out 2 weeks now waiting for various parts. thankfully the dealer fees for overnight parts are very very reasonable. and contrary to what the TSW write up says you DO need the r53 shift cables, they are quite different than the r50.

Yea well....my parts guys are the heat and I can return the cables if I dont use them....but the Cooper replacement that I bought is already in the car....oh well...I can sell that one Im sure...And the car is already back together...Im just having some serious cable issues. I am about to part everything out and sell the shell. I can get about 10K easy for all the crap on my car.....there is an 06 STi...that I am very interested in.. My car can rot in Mini Cooper hell! Stoopid Midlands tranny... Can you see how upset I am??? As I have been talking with TSW for some leads...my shifter rod (when the cables are attached) has neutral al the way over to the right and not centered. This has reverse where 3rd should be and i only can engage 1st and 2nd. No 3rd-6th due to lack of movement. the transmssion linkeage assy is configured correctly and the trans is 2500 miles old. sounds crisp....so I know my problem is in those shitty cables. Oh well....Im tired of dealing with it for now. but the clutch is bled (thanks TSW for the shop aid) and radiator and brakes are bled....need to just fix cable issue and put the bumper back on...I put Royal Purple, Redline and Motul RBF600 fluids in...

I had the same issue with the cables. the fact is the cooper cables are about 3/4 of an inch shorter than the R53 cables.
I got the cooper S cables and everything is fine now
Im driving my car finally and I am pretty happy with everything. Its just going to take some getting used to.
I did have a wheel speed sensor that was bad after we were finished and had to replace that and then there was the Cruise Control issue. it didnt work except for in 3rd gear... like that makes any sense.
but I figured that one out on my own.
while driving the car I pressed and held the cruise button for several seconds until the dash light began to flash. I then turned the car off and turned it back on, Bingo, the cruise works fine in all gears now.
all told I had about $4700 in parts into the swap, including gearbox, stage 3 clutch, ACT flywheel, New starter, used driveshafts, Quaife LSD, short shifter, new engine and tranny mounts, and assorted parts and fluids, so there was no question about buying new shift cables when that came up [$100 each and I had the dealer overnight them to me for only $20].
I would recomend this swap but as I stated before it is key to start with all your parts in hand, assume the worst and return what you dont use.

Helicopters? That's pretty sweet. I feel you, but it looks too good to leave it in your garage. And the only depressing thing in your garage is the color of the walls.

Not to hijack the thread but this is what I used to do (fix them).....

TO THIS (build them)......

It's hard work!.... Then you have the Mini, BMW and Touareg to contend with and then to paint my walls! Its soooo overwhelming..... And btw....the helicopter is all composite and weighs in at 3800lbs loaded up!!! Thats about the weight of the BMW....!!!!!

While the gearbox has been discussed to death...Im gonna threadjack it for a bit.... Yea, when the helicopter goes through flight test and FAA licensing we get to ride along as ballasts.... Cool thing too is this bad boy can fly backwards..... Anyways, get this...I found 2 NEW 22" OZ Canyon ST wheels with one having a tire on it...285/35/22. Just these 2 wheels and the one tire MSRP's at 2400 bucks. So I got a steal!!! They are going on the Touareg btw...
