Suspension Wheel bearing/ hub problem?
Wheel bearing/ hub problem?
I am hearing some noise only when I turn to the right. It's easiest to hear when I am coasting (at idle) at about 25-30 mph. Noise is a low metallic rubbing sound. Thus there is some load on the left front suspension. Is it possible this is a wheel bearing noise? Car is '02S with 87,000 miles, probably with thousands of track miles over six years and fifty plus events. I have replaced outer ball joints, the control arm and bushing on that side (three years ago). Have had H&R coilovers, Helix camber plates for two years with no problems. Steering rack is tight, alignment is perfect (-1.2, 0 toe), tire wear is good. I'm also wondering how to determine if this could be a deteriorating CV joint . The noise is neither a moan or a squeak. Just a 'friction' sound, distinctive.
CV joint should sound like a series of clicking noises...a bearing failure is hard to determine because these failures play hide and seek when hot or cold.
When hot, remove the wheel and brake rotor and then spin the bearing/hub. As you spinn the bearing/hub you may hear bearings 'drop' as if falling from the top to the bottom. The typical audio, however, is a somewhat high pitch sqeak as the wheel is turned under while driving.
The dropping bearing was very apparent in my Driver rear bearing, which I replaced yesterday.
