removing plastic on steering wheel spokes

Anybody know how to remove the plastic pieces on the spokes of the steering wheel, and the piece that is on the part of the steering wheel what works the horn??

I would like to paint these but i dont know if there is a trick to getting them off.

spoke caps: there are torx screws behind each one of the pieces.
i've never tried to take them off without taking off the horn/airbag and steering wheel. looking at it i dont think you can get them off without removing the horn.

center ring cannot be removed from the airbag/horn assembly

it's not really.

1. disconnect the battery.

2. slide in a long flathead with the flathead horizontal into the 2 "+" slots at the corners of the wheel.

there are springs inside of the wheel holding the horn in place. you're going to push on the springs with the screwdriver.

here it is closed:

this it opened:

slightly pull on the corner of the horn/airbag while you get each side done.

there you go. airbag's off.

no problem.

the +'s are not cut so you'll have to take an exacto knife or razor to it to get thru it. place the airbag metal side down when you put it aside on a no static surface.

post pics when you're done with the paint job

Now for someone to make some big bucks and to offer these pieces in chrome. I wouldn't mind letting loose with 150 bucks If I could have these made in chrome. I know that they are offered for the 2 spoke wheels but does anyone know if they are made in the 3 spoke design?

For less than $150 you could just take them to any plating company and have your parts chromed...

But the airbag ring isn't removable, so it will still be silver.

Sounds like it might look kinda dumb to me.

After the airbag is taken off do you just press it back into place and the springs lock it in? How does that go?

I think most chrome places do that now. They would know who to send you to anyway.

I wouldn't have the courage to try removing the center ring around the airbag, but I was able to slip a credit card behind the edge all around. So get a piece of nylon sheet (or plastic bag, whatever), cut it into a circle, and stuff the edges up under the ring using the credit card. Do the same from the outside with the piece you cut the circle out of. Just some suggestions. I am hoping to paint mine, once a million other projects are done. I have the lighted multi-function stuff to deal with though, so its going to be interesting (I'm thinking latex mask brushed on and cut out around the buttons, but cutting those circles will be tough).

I think I saw chrome for the non-mfsw three spoke. Maybe on a british site?

Yeah I have looked real hard but haven't found chrome even for the non MFSW, if you could get the Brit site I would appreciate it.

Just search locally for a plating company. That's generally all the company does...chrome/gold/copper/etc plating for metal and plastic parts.

I tried doing exactly what you illustrated for about 30 mins and no luck

I'm trying to replace the panels with the mf switches...any idea why I can't seem to get the blasted airbag off the steering wheel?

Thanks!

You're probably not hitting the spring dead on. You should be able to feel the tension remove. Pull up on that side, then go to the other side and repeat. Keep trying, and you'll get it. Just be careful.

Actually, I felt a 3D domed decal for these parts would work great. Especially since these rings get all dinged up from seat belts all the time. Mine looks like the surface of the moon from previous owner :(

A vinyl decal would be too thin to cover the dings, So I sent an email to Aestethic Creations Inc to see if they would manufacture a 3D ring in colors and chrome to cover it. I Never got a response back .....
