I got the letter today saying that their going to shorten the exhaust pipes. Do you have to do it? I've never burned my leg on it. Also will making it shorter mess up the bumper like turn it black.

Got the letter. Once burned, you never forget. I don't want shorter pipes.

Got mine, but not interested. I can understand if you have kids but otherwise there's no problem for me after a year of ownership.

Is it true that the AB cars have longer exhaust pipes?

My pipes are just fine the way they are now!!!!!!

I looked at my tips and they are even with the bumper. I would probably have to lay under the car to burn my legs on them. Even if they did stick out I doubt if I would be stupid enough to stick my legs against them. I had a Corvette with four exhaust tips that stuck out but in the ten years I owned that car I never burned my legs on them. It was a coupe and you had to get close to get stuff out of the trunk but you would know the tips were there so you just had to be a little careful.Sticking out a little is better then melting the plastic bumper cover or having exhaust gasses coming into the car because the pipes are to short.

It is a TSB not a recall so they can't make you change them. Just make sure when you take it in that you tell them you don't want them changed out.

I got mine today and NO SIR!!!!!!!!!! IM NOT going to get my pipes shortened I saw an 09 S with the pipes and they're tucked in pretty far you can't even see them pertruding if you are standing to the side of the car..... I wonder if they'll do the same with the JCW exhaust

I took mine in 2 wks ago to get the window fixed. They said they had to shorten them and I told them no. I was left with no choice if I wanted my car back that afternoon. They told me they must replace them cause its been recalled. I told them if they look shitty they have to put the original ones back on. They don't look bad at all. They are now even with the bumper. I guess 09's exhausts are all like that now. ??? That's what I read somewhere. Just don't take it to the dealership for anything if you don't want them replaced.

Hey Georgia7377 you use Desert mini right? I saw your location is Las Vegas.
I live in Vegas too!

I just hope this whole recall is for a good reason, like if someone seriously did injure themselves, and not because some people are too dumb to figure out exhaust tips tend to get hot.

Took my MINI in Wednesday for service and out it came with shiny new exhaust tips just slightly shorter. I never burnt myself on the tips, but I'm glad MINI is doing its part to protect us from ourselves. I got my letter yesterday. Really the new tips are not that much different.

No letter, no matter. Next time it goes in for service they will make the change on their own.

Bet ya.

Oh well.

You can probably call your service guy and they can lead you through resetting the TPMS sensors if you don't actually have a low tire. Mine did that when it first rained after I got it. They talked me through the reset process and it hasn't popped up since.

i got a letter yesterday too. I have no issues with it and will not pursue having them shortened. I was hoping it was a TSB to fix the high hood temp and melting scoop issue!

Sketch - you have a PM.

I was at the dealer yesterday just checking things out....all of their new '09 S's had the shorter pipes and although subtle, I think it's a big step backwards aesthetically. I don't want it done to mine and being a TSB, simply telling your service advisor not to do it when your car's in for something else should be sufficient. BTW, they had a new JCW car on the lot and the salesman told me its tips were shorter than the previous ones he'd seen too.

I got the letter yesterday, but I'd taken mine in for service 2 weeks ago and they did the switch without asking (or telling) me about it. I actually asked about it when I picked up the car (I couldn't tell they'd actually done it). Good move, Mini. If you think you can see a difference (without looking straight down the bumper) you're taking too many substances!
