My MINI keeps getting keyed...

So this morning I'm walking to my car to head off to work... and I notice a 3 foot long scratch running the entire length of the passenger door to the boot...

This is the 3rd time in a couple months that my Mini got keyed. The first time it was on the bumper, the second time it was the panel above the passenger side rear wheel, and now its the whole side of the car.

I wasn't parked weird or anything, I don't know anyone in this area... and I don't know what to do!!!

I'm sooooo angry. Can anyone guide me in the right direction?

I don't have any enemies. And even if I did, I'm living in San Diego kinda on my own, 100's of miles away from the people I know...

I would definitely change your insurance comprehensive deductible to $0 if you can! To prepare for any future misfortunes.

Maybe install a spy camera somewhere, or if the place you're parking has secuirty cameras, see if they have tapes.

My plan of attack so far is to first
1) Report it to the police
2) Get it fixed? Somehow.. any ideas how much stuff like this costs?
3) Buy a wireless cam and see if I can catch the guy

You can get a wireless surveilance system w/night vision very cheap on ebay. You can bet it's someone who lives nearby.
Give a police report on the number of times you've been keyed. If you catch the person responsible blame them for all the incidents and make them pay.
It is not random when the same car is keyed more than once.

Be aware of children on bikes. If they like the car they will ride around it and not have sense enough to keep the handle bars away from the car.

I had a 5' scratch on my BMW because of children. (I thought I was keyed)

Hmm... not quite sure I understand :P I reported this to the police and he recommended getting insurance to fix it.. I have a 500 dollar deductible though. But besides the money, I'm scared that the body shop won't do a good job repainting it.. and it would lower the value of the car, etc.

$0 or $50 deductible for comprehensive is best way to go. i didn't know before and had $500 deductible thinking it'll save money. then i found out $50 deductible is only ~$20 more every 6 months.

Dude, a scratch is worse than imperfect touch up.
Besides, you get to approve a repair before you accept it. The scratch, not so much.

Ouch! That really stinks.... We live in Oceanside - where in SD do you live? My cabrio was keyed at the Oceanside Train station - entire left side front to back and it was $3K to fix - insurance paid...and...the body shop matched the paint perfectly - if that helps...

I live in Rancho Bernardo, pretty safe neighborhood, never had a problem in 2 years until now. And thanks for that info -- it helps a lot. I now have some idea of how much its going to cost.

You would think that I have enemies.. but thats what has me so baffled. I have NO idea who would do something like this. I dont know anyone in this area...I just go to work, go home, and if I ever go out I'm driving to L.A.

I also parked on the street, not in front of my townhouse (because I share my parking spot with a roommate)

Anyway Im just completely dumbfounded. Thats why I think its just random acts of vandalism on a beautiful car.

Move somewhere with enclosed parking (not just covered). Best thing you could possibly do for a car ever. Quite unfortunate, though

Who's house did you park in front of? Perhaps they don't like people parking in front of their house?

Is there any chance you drive like an idiot around the neighbourhood? I know a lot of people get very pissed off if they see you driving around in an easily identifiable car in their neighbourhood going well over the speed limit trying to impress.... who the hell knows who. Like this kid for example, he's probably going to get his car keyed sooner or later.

Everyone usually parks in the street.. it's usually full of cars and hard to find a spot. If they dont like people parking in front of their house they'd have to key a car like every day.

I don't drive particularly fast around the neighborhood either as the street is real small and curves, so its hard to see oncoming cars. Its very dangerous to go above 10-15 mph.

Really sorry to hear that...hope you can get it fixed to your satisfaction.

You can report it to the police and set up a camera to catch the scum red handed...or wait it out hoping you can catch him/her in the act, take baseball bat and then call the medics....

This is so out of control, I have been reading a lot of this on the forums and my buddy is a cop and tells me it is common for nice car to get keyed..makes me sick.

Try using ScratchX liberally and use some elbow grease if it's just the clearcoat! If it's past the clearcoat and took paint off, then I guess just get a touchup I don't know if insurance covers that or not? Did you file a report?

Rocapotamus,
Sounds like you are making someone very angry around where you live to me. The MINI cam would probably be your best bet at catching them and having them prosectuted?

Any Ex-girl friends/boy friends that might be doing this?

Good luck to you!

Wonder if this could be adapted for the boot...
